How Long Does It Take to Hear Back After a GitHub Interview?

GitHub promises an update at every stage it names. Its careers site says your recruiter follows up after the hiring manager conversation, by email or by phone call. It also promises an update after the assessment and a decision after the interviews.

GitHub gives no number of days for any of that. Candidates report a few weeks from the first call to a decision. The take home exercise and the onsite booking are the two slow parts.

GitHub also says a member of its talent team guides you through the whole process. So you always know who to ask.

Timeline by Stage

GitHub publishes four hiring steps. They are the Talent Conversation, the Hiring Manager Conversation, a tool based assessment, and the interviews. The waits are candidate reports plus the typical pattern for companies of this size, not confirmed by GitHub.

StageTypical waitWhat is happening
Application to recruiter replyOne to three weeksResume and public profile review
Talent Conversation to hiring managerThree to seven daysThe recruiter books the manager call
Take home sent to dueAbout two to three daysYou write the code on your own schedule
Take home to resultAbout one weekAn engineer reads your code, tests, and commits
Onsite to decisionAbout one weekYour recruiter collects the write ups and calls you

The tool based assessment is a coding exercise for engineers. GitHub says other roles get a content or writing assignment instead. Candidates report a window of about two to three days for it.

Part of this wait depends on you. Sending the exercise back early starts the review early.

Candidates report onsite rounds that match the product. A pairing session, a code review round, a design round, and a behavioral round are all reported. Reviewers read your tests, your documentation, and your commit messages.

Does GitHub Send Rejection Emails?

Yes, and GitHub publishes that promise. Your recruiter tells you the hiring decision after the interviews, by email or by phone call.

That promise covers stages you reached. It does not cover an application that nobody read. Silence at the application step is still common.

Detailed feedback is rare. Expect a short, general message.

GitHub does invite candidates to ask for changes that make the process work better for them, including for a disability. That invitation is about access, not about grades.

How to Follow Up

Email the recruiter who has guided you so far. Wait five business days after a screen, and seven after the final interviews.

Hi [name], thank you for the time last week. I enjoyed the pairing session and the questions about my past pull requests. Could you tell me the status of my application and the next step? I am glad to wait if the team needs more time.

One reminder is enough. If a week passes with no answer, send one more. After that, assume the role is closed and keep applying.

Can You Reapply, and How Soon?

GitHub does not publish a reapply rule. No public report names a waiting period.

About six months is the usual advice for a company of this size, not confirmed by GitHub. Apply sooner when a role opens in another region.

One step helps more here than almost anywhere. GitHub reviews your public profile, so publish real work before you apply again. Clear commits, tests, and documentation are the exact things the assessment grades.

What to Wear

GitHub interviews are on video. The company is remote first and hires across many countries. It hires in the United States and Canada, in several European countries, and in Australia, India, and Japan.

A plain shirt in one solid color is the safe choice. Avoid thin stripes and shiny fabric, which look poor on camera. Test your camera, microphone, and light before the call.

The dress level is low. A plain shirt is enough for every round. Staff there call each other Hubbers, and the tone in interviews is friendly.

If you are ever invited to an office, dress the same way. Add clean shoes and arrive about ten minutes before the start.
