How Long Does It Take to Hear Back After a GitLab Interview?
GitLab publishes its hiring process, but it does not publish a wait time. Its handbook lists seven stages and says only that it will be in touch soon if your experience fits. Candidate reports supply the numbers below.
Most report a decision within about a week of the team interviews. Glassdoor puts the average near a month from first contact to decision. Some candidates report a process spread over two months, usually when scheduling is slow.
Plan for about one week after each round, and about a month overall.
Timeline by Stage
| Stage | Typical wait | What is happening |
|---|---|---|
| Application review | One to two weeks | A recruiter reads the application in Greenhouse |
| Screening call | About one week | A 30 to 40 minute call on background and fit |
| Assessment | About one week | A written task, used for some roles only |
| Technical interview | One to two weeks | A working session, used for some roles only |
| Team interviews | About one week | Three 45 minute interviews are compared |
| References and offer | One to two weeks | References are checked as the offer is prepared |
Scheduling is the slowest part. GitLab asks candidates to offer many days and times across at least two weeks for the team interviews. Its interviewers work in many time zones.
That is why booking one round can take several days.
Does GitLab Send Rejection Emails?
GitLab declines the candidates it interviews, but it does not reply to every application. Its handbook says the talent acquisition team is responsible for declining a candidate, and that a candidate can be declined at any stage. The same page states plainly that a reply to every applicant is not possible.
Feedback is more likely here than at most companies. The handbook says a hiring manager should be ready to tell you why you were declined if you reached the manager or team interviews.
So ask for the reason plainly. The published wording gives you a fair basis for the request. A short verbal reason is the realistic outcome at the team interview stage.
How to Follow Up
Write to the recruiter after seven business days. GitLab uses Greenhouse for scheduling, so your recruiter thread already holds the history. Reply in that thread rather than starting a new one.
Hi [Name], thank you for the [round] on [date]. I am writing to ask where my application for the [role] position stands. Is there an update, or a date when you expect one? I am glad to share anything else that helps.
One follow up a week later is fine. After that, treat the role as closed until the recruiter returns.
Can You Reapply, and How Soon?
GitLab publishes a six month rule, with an exception. If you were declined because you were not qualified enough, you may reapply to the same position once six months have passed.
The exception matters more. If you gain the skills, experience, or knowledge named in your feedback, you may reapply at any time.
So the six months is not a fixed penalty. It is the default when nothing changed.
There is a second published rule for research and development candidates. If you already completed a technical interview, that technical feedback stays valid for up to six months. It still counts when you apply to another role in the same job family.
GitLab says it then aims to run a shorter interview process. That can remove a full round from your second attempt.
What to Wear
Every round is a video call on Zoom, so dress for a camera. GitLab is an all remote company, so there is no office visit to plan for. Its handbook also states that interviews may not be recorded in any format.
A plain shirt in a solid color is enough. Team members dress casually, so a suit is not expected.
Check your camera, light, and sound in Zoom before the call. A quiet room matters more than your clothes here.
How to Prepare
- Learn the stage names. What is the GitLab interview process like? maps the published stages to what candidates actually report.
- Prepare three references early. GitLab asks for three, and at least one must be a past manager. Ask them before the team interviews start.
- Get ready for the values questions. Top GitLab behavioral interview questions covers the themes that fill the team interviews.
- Study the design round. What to expect in the GitLab system design interview covers the pipeline and scale questions this round uses.
- Practice remote communication. Grokking Modern Behavioral Interview helps you give clear, structured answers on a video call.
