How Long Does It Take to Hear Back After a Jane Street Interview?

Jane Street publishes its own answer: about one week after an interview. The firm says you should hear from a recruiter within a few days of applying. It also says it will reply whether or not it is continuing with you.

Its engineering blog is more exact. The blog says the firm tries to reply within one week. It adds that no reply after 10 days is unexpected, and that you should write and ask at that point.

Timeline by Stage

StageTypical waitWhat is happening
After applyingA few days, per Jane StreetA recruiter reviews the application and writes to you
After the online assessmentA few days to one weekThe test is scored and sent to the recruiting team
After a phone interviewAbout one week, per Jane StreetAn employee reports a weekly meeting to review that week's calls
Between phone screen and final dayOne to three weeksTravel and a full day at one office are arranged
After the final daySame day or next morningThe team decides on the day of the interviews
Offer to decisionA few daysThe recruiter discusses the role, the team, and the start date

An employee has described that weekly review meeting in public. It is one reason a phone interview result takes about a week, even when you did well.

The final day is different. An employee reports that the team decides on the day of the interviews. Candidates report an answer the same day or the next morning.

Does Jane Street Send Rejection Emails?

Yes, and the firm states this on its own hiring pages. It says it will follow up whether or not it is continuing, because candidates should not be left waiting.

Candidate reports mostly agree. People report short rejection emails at every stage, including after the online test. One old report describes three months of silence, but recent reports do not match it.

Written feedback on your performance is not given. Jane Street explains its grading in general terms on its blog instead.

For a software engineering phone interview, the blog says most candidates who receive offers finish the second part of the problem. Strong candidates complete the third part.

How to Follow Up

Wait the full week first. Jane Street's own guidance is to ask after 10 days with no reply.

"Hi [Name], thank you again for the interview on [date]. I enjoyed the problem we worked through together. It has now been 10 days, so I wanted to ask whether there is any update. I am still very interested in the role."

Send it to your recruiter, not to the interviewer. If another offer has a deadline, say so plainly. Jane Street tells candidates to do exactly that, and candidates report a faster answer after they do.

Can You Reapply, and How Soon?

Jane Street publishes guidance here too. It suggests current students wait at least a year. For experienced candidates, it suggests waiting until your experience or situation has changed in a real way.

The firm calls this a guideline and not a hard rule. It also says many current employees did not pass the interview the first time. A second application is normal here.

Change something real before you apply again. A harder job, a finished project, or a new language are the kinds of change that guidance describes.

What to Wear

Jane Street answers this in public as well. It describes a casual office where many people wear jeans and a t-shirt most days. It adds that candidates coming straight from work may be dressed more formally, and that this is fine.

Phone interviews are ordinary phone calls. Video is arranged only when your connection is poor, so ask for it early if you need it. Interviews run during local business hours from Monday to Friday, never on weekends.

The final day is in person at one of the firm's offices. Jane Street pays for the travel and the hotel. Wear a plain shirt and clean trousers, since a suit is not expected.

Jane Street says the day has two to four technical rounds. They are long, so comfortable clothes and shoes help.
