How Long Does It Take to Hear Back After a Modal Interview?
Candidates report an average of 11 days from application to decision at Modal. That figure comes from Glassdoor and covers all job titles, from a small number of reports. It is short compared with large companies, which often take four to eight weeks, although the wait after each single stage is not reported.
For a company of Modal's size, a few days to one week after each stage is typical, not confirmed. One candidate reports completing a design task and never receiving feedback, so follow up yourself if a week passes with no reply.
Timeline by Stage
| Stage | Typical wait | What is happening |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Days to two weeks, not confirmed | A recruiter or engineer reviews resumes against open roles |
| Recruiter call | A few days, not confirmed | The recruiter schedules the technical screen |
| Technical screen | A few days to one week, not confirmed | The interviewer writes feedback; the team decides on an onsite |
| Design task | Not reported; one report of no reply | Engineers review the work, if the process continues |
| Onsite interviews | A few days to one week, not confirmed | Interviewers compare notes and a decision is made |
| Full process | About 11 days on average, reported | Small team, few rounds, quick decisions |
Does Modal Send Rejection Emails?
Modal does not publish its policy on rejections, and candidate reports are few. About half of the reporting candidates rate the experience as positive. The main complaint is silence: one candidate completed a design task, heard nothing afterward, and describes the company as disengaged.
Two conclusions follow. First, a rejection email after a live round is typical when a recruiter manages the process, though Modal has not confirmed this. Second, silence after the design task has been reported at least once, so do not treat silence as a decision: send one follow-up email, then continue your search if no reply comes.
Detailed feedback is rare at small companies, because interviewers protect their time and legal caution limits what recruiters share. If you ask, ask for one thing to improve, not a full review.
How to Follow Up
Send the email to the recruiter, or to the interviewer if no recruiter was involved, five to seven business days after the stage. Keep it to four sentences.
"Hello [Name], thank you for the [technical screen or design task] on [date]. I enjoyed the discussion about [one specific topic, such as container start time]. I am still very interested in the [role name] role. Could you share the expected timeline for the next step?"
Send it once. If two more weeks pass, send one shorter note, and after that assume the process has ended and keep applying elsewhere.
Can You Reapply, and How Soon?
Nothing is reported about Modal's reapplication policy. Companies of this size usually accept a new application after about six months for the same role, and some allow it sooner for a different role. Treat six months as typical, not confirmed.
Use the waiting period well: deploy a real project on Modal, learn its container runtime from the engineering posts, and note what changed in your skills. Say that in the new application, because a recruiter can see the old one.
What to Wear
Most Modal interviews are on video, so wear a plain, collared shirt or a neat top in a solid color. Sit in front of a clean background with a light source in front of you, not behind you. Test the camera and microphone the day before, and close every other program on your computer.
If you are invited to an office, dress at the level of a casual engineering office, where clean jeans or chinos and a plain shirt are fine. A suit is not needed and would not match the office. Arrive ten minutes early with a notebook.
How to Prepare
- Know the loop before you wait for it. What is the Modal interview process like? explains each reported stage.
- Use the waiting time. Study the design topics in What to expect in the Modal system design interview, because the design task is the least predictable step.
- Keep the motivation answer ready. The question returns in later rounds, so keep How to answer why Modal ready.
- Practice the behavioral side. Grokking Modern Behavioral Interview teaches short, evidence based answers for recruiter and founder rounds.
