How Long Does It Take to Hear Back After a Shopify Interview?
Shopify publishes six named stages, but says timelines vary. Its careers FAQ states plainly that timelines vary depending on the role and the number of applicants. No end to end number is published.
The stages are Apply, Initial call, Craft Assessment, The Life Story, Meet the team, and Decision. Shopify does publish how long each one lasts.
Depending on the role, Shopify may set up an initial call of 15 to 30 minutes. The Craft Assessment is 60 to 75 minutes. The Life Story is a 30 to 60 minute conversation with a recruiter.
In Meet the team you speak with three to five future co-workers, up to an hour each.
The waits between stages below are typical for companies of this size, not confirmed. Plan for about four to eight weeks in total.
Timeline by Stage
| Stage | Typical wait | What is happening |
|---|---|---|
| Apply | Often no reply at all | Shopify says it only follows up with people it wants to interview |
| Initial call (15 to 30 minutes) | Three to five business days | The recruiter or hiring manager checks fit and explains the next steps |
| Craft Assessment (60 to 75 minutes) | Five to ten business days | A specialist in your craft reviews your approach and your assessment |
| The Life Story (30 to 60 minutes) | Five to ten business days | The recruiter writes up your career themes and impact |
| Meet the team (three to five people) | One to two weeks | Each interviewer files feedback |
| Decision | One to two weeks | Shopify says the hiring team meets before answering you |
One group of applicants follows a different order. Shopify says applicants for research and development roles skip the initial call. They go directly into pair programming, then The Life Story.
Pair programming means writing code together with an interviewer in one session.
Does Shopify Send Rejection Emails?
After applying, often not. Shopify states that because of the volume of applications it receives daily, it only follows up with candidates it wants to move forward with. So silence after an application is the stated policy.
After an interview, expect an answer from your recruiter. Shopify does not publish a deadline for that answer. It does say that the hiring team meets before getting back to you, using feedback from people of different seniority and perspectives. That group step is one reason the Decision stage takes time.
Feedback is not promised. Shopify publishes no round by round scoring for candidates. Expect a decision without a breakdown.
If you want detail, ask your recruiter one specific question. Ask which part of the Craft Assessment was weakest. A narrow question is answered more often than a general one.
How to Follow Up
Wait five business days after a round. Then write once to your recruiter.
Hi [name], thank you for the Life Story conversation on Monday. I enjoyed talking about the merchant problems the team is working on. Could you tell me where I stand and when the hiring team expects to decide? I am happy to send anything else that helps.
Send it once, then allow another week before a second note. Name the stage by Shopify's own label, because the six stages have set names.
Can You Reapply, and How Soon?
Shopify says yes, and publishes a number for engineering. Its FAQ answers the reapply question with "Absolutely". For engineering roles, it asks you to wait six to twelve months before applying again.
Shopify also asks you to gain more experience first when you reapply for the same role. It asks applicants to pick one or two roles, and to keep to two applications in any thirty day period.
Use the waiting months for one area. Shopify says the Craft Assessment is run by at least one person in your own craft, who looks at what you are best at.
What to Wear
Shopify publishes the format of one stage only. It describes the initial call as a phone or virtual conversation. It does not say where the later rounds happen, so ask your recruiter.
Shopify's own dress advice is short. It tells candidates to come as they are, and says it is happy as long as you are comfortable. So a clean, plain shirt is enough.
Avoid thin stripes on camera, because they render badly. Sit in a quiet room with light in front of you. Test your camera, your microphone, and your code editor before a pair programming round.
For an office visit, the same clothes work. Bring photo identification and arrive about ten minutes early.
How to Prepare
- Learn the named stages first. What is the Shopify interview process like? explains each one, so you count the right wait.
- Read what candidates report. Shopify interview process on Reddit collects candidate accounts of the rounds.
- Prepare the Life Story properly. It is a career narrative, not a quiz. Top Shopify behavioral interview questions shows which stories to bring, and Grokking Modern Behavioral Interview teaches the delivery.
- Practice the technical rounds out loud. Shopify system design interview questions lists the topics, and Grokking the Coding Interview prepares you for pair programming.
