How Long Does It Take to Hear Back After a Lyft Interview?
Most candidates report four to six weeks end to end at Lyft. After the onsite rounds, candidates report hearing back within about a week. Typical waits between the early rounds are shorter, about two to five days.
Scheduling the onsite is usually the slowest step. One more step adds time at the end. A pass at the onsite is not always the last step, because Lyft runs a team matching stage before an offer.
Team matching means the recruiter looks for a team that wants your skills. That search depends on open roles, not on your performance. It can be quick, or it can add another week or more.
Timeline by Stage
| Stage | Typical wait | What is happening |
|---|---|---|
| After you apply | A few days to two weeks | A recruiter reads your application |
| After the recruiter screen | About 2 to 5 days | Scheduling the technical phone screen |
| After the technical phone screen | About 2 to 5 days | A pass to the onsite, or a short rejection email |
| Before the onsite | One to two weeks | Matching calendars across several interviewers |
| After the onsite | About one week | Interviewers compare notes, then the recruiter calls |
| During team matching | Days to a few weeks | The recruiter looks for a team with an open role |
The technical screen uses CoderPad, a shared editor where you write and run code with the interviewer watching. Candidates report a medium difficulty coding question, plus one or two basic computer science questions.
The onsite includes a round that is specific to Lyft. Candidates report a laptop interview of about 90 minutes. You solve a practical problem in a language you choose, and you may use the internet while you work.
That round takes longer to grade than a standard coding round. Do not expect an answer on the same day.
Does Lyft Send Rejection Emails?
Lyft does not publish a rejection policy. Candidates report a short standard email from the recruiter once a stage ends.
The email rarely carries written feedback. Recruiters sometimes give one line of verbal feedback on a call, if you ask politely.
Silence after the onsite is not always a no. Team matching can stay quiet for weeks even after you have passed. Ask the recruiter directly whether you passed the onsite rounds and are now in team matching.
The answer tells you whether you are still being judged, or only being placed.
How to Follow Up
Send the note about five business days after a round. Wait a full week after the onsite, since grading the laptop round takes longer. Keep it to four sentences, and ask for a date rather than a verdict.
Hi [Name], thank you for the [round name] on [date]. I enjoyed the discussion about [one specific topic]. I wanted to ask whether there is an update, or whether the next step is team matching. If a decision is still a few days away, could you tell me when to expect it?
Send one note. If silence continues for another week, send one more. Then continue with your other applications.
Can You Reapply, and How Soon?
Lyft does not publish a reapply rule. Typical for companies of this size, not confirmed: wait about six months before applying again.
Lyft has offices in several cities. Its headquarters is in San Francisco, and it also has offices in New York, Seattle, Toronto, and Mexico City. A role at another office or another team is often the faster second try.
Prepare during the gap. If the laptop round was the weak one, practice building small working programs under a timer. If the design round was the weak one, study the marketplace and mapping problems that match the product.
What to Wear
The recruiter screen and the technical phone screen are video calls. Dress for a camera. A plain shirt in one solid color works well.
Avoid busy patterns and strong stripes. Sit with a plain wall behind you. Test your camera, your microphone, and the CoderPad link the recruiter sends.
If your onsite is at an office, clean casual clothes are right. Jeans and a plain shirt are normal there, and no suit is needed. Ask your recruiter which rounds are in person, and bring your laptop charger for the laptop round.
How to Prepare
- Learn the rounds first. What is the Lyft interview process like? lists the stages, so you can plan the waiting around them.
- Practice coding under a clock. Grokking the Coding Interview teaches the patterns behind medium problems, and the technical screen uses that level of problem.
- Prepare the design round on product problems. The topics are in What to expect in the Lyft system design interview, and Grokking the System Design Interview covers the parts they use.
- Have stories ready for the behavioral round. The question list is in Top Lyft behavioral interview questions.
- Write your reasons for this company. Team matching goes faster when you can say what you want to build. Use How to answer why Lyft.
