How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Boston Dynamics?"

The best answer names a specific robot, shows hands-on evidence from your own work, and states what you want to build there. Boston Dynamics makes three robots. Spot is a four-legged robot used for industrial inspection. Stretch moves boxes in warehouses. Atlas is a humanoid robot aimed at factory work. The company also sells Orbit, software that manages whole fleets of its robots. Interviewers ask the motivation question early, often in the recruiter screen. They use it to separate people who admire the famous videos from people ready for real robotics work. The company is famous, so stated interest is cheap. Evidence is what separates candidates.

What the Interviewer Is Listening For

  • Hands-on evidence. Recruiters ask directly about practical robotics experience, including ROS, the Robot Operating System, a common open-source robotics framework. A course project, a research lab, or a home build all count if you did the work.
  • A specific pull toward their robots. Name Spot, Stretch, Atlas, or Orbit, and say why that product interests you. Generic robot enthusiasm is the weakest possible signal here.
  • Comfort with hardware reality. Robots break, sensors drift, and demos fail. The company wants people who enjoy debugging across hardware and software, not people who expect clean abstractions.
  • Patience with hard problems. The company spent decades on locomotion research before selling products. Answers that show long-term persistence fit that history.

A Three-Part Structure

Part 1: Your hook (one or two sentences). What genuinely pulls you toward legged or mobile robots. A concrete moment beats a general claim.

Part 2: Your evidence (two or three sentences). The robotics or systems work you have done, with specifics. Name the stack, the problem, and one result.

Part 3: Your direction (one or two sentences). The team or problem you want: perception, planning, controls, simulation, or the fleet software behind Orbit.

Sample Answer

"I want to work at Boston Dynamics because I have spent three years on robot autonomy. Now I want to ship that work, not just publish it. In my research lab I built the navigation stack for a wheeled inspection robot using ROS and C++. Our robot completed a 2 km indoor course with no human help, and the failure cases taught me more than the successes. Spot is the platform I compare everything against, because it works outside the lab on real industrial sites. I want to work on the autonomy software that keeps Spot reliable on customer sites. Watching a machine handle stairs it has never seen is still the most exciting thing I know."

Seven sentences. It names a product, gives hands-on evidence with a number, and states a direction. Notice what it does not do. It never mentions the viral videos, and it never praises the company in general terms.

Common Mistakes

  • Quoting the viral videos as your whole reason. Everyone has seen the dancing robots. Interviewers hear this daily, and it signals no engineering depth.
  • No product knowledge. Not knowing what Spot or Stretch is sold for reads as zero research. The company sells inspection and warehouse automation, not entertainment.
  • Pure software framing. Saying you want to avoid hardware issues is a direct mismatch. The work is hardware and software together.
  • Ignoring the safety dimension. These are heavy machines around people. One sentence showing you take that seriously helps.
  • Claiming interest in every team. Saying you would do anything reads as unfocused. Name one area and show evidence for it.
