How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Decagon?"

The best answer connects Decagon's product to your own work. Decagon builds AI agents for enterprise customer support. An AI agent is software that uses a large language model to complete tasks on its own. Decagon's agents resolve customer tickets end to end for companies like Notion, Eventbrite, and Bilt. A strong answer proves three things. You understand this product. You have owned real work from start to finish. You want a fast, customer-facing pace.

What the Interviewer Listens For

1. Real product knowledge. Decagon's core agent loads a company's knowledge, workflows, and actions. An action is a task the agent can perform, such as issuing a refund. The company also builds tools around the agent. One of them, Watchtower, reviews every conversation against rules a customer writes in plain language. Naming a specific part like this shows you did real research.

2. Ownership evidence. Decagon publishes its values. One of them is "Just Get It Done". Interviewers want stories where you took an idea and shipped it yourself. A side project with real users works well as proof.

3. Customer focus. Another stated value is "Invent What Customers Want". Decagon engineers work directly with enterprise customers. Show a moment when user feedback changed what you built.

4. Interest in agent problems. The hard problems here are retrieval, evaluation, and guardrails. Retrieval means finding the right company document for each question. Evaluation means measuring whether the agent actually resolved the ticket. Guardrails are limits that stop the agent from acting outside its rules. Real curiosity about these problems is worth more than general AI excitement.

A Three Part Structure

Part 1: The product hook (2 to 3 sentences). Say what draws you to AI support agents. Include evidence, such as a product you tried or built.

Part 2: Your proof (2 to 3 sentences). Describe one thing you built and owned end to end. Include a number.

Part 3: The direction (1 to 2 sentences). Say what you want to build at Decagon.

Sample Answer

"I want to work at Decagon because support agents are the clearest real use of AI today. I built an internal support bot at my company that answers questions from our documentation. I own it end to end: the retrieval pipeline, the evaluation set, and the escalation flow. It now resolves about 40 percent of our tickets without a human. That project taught me how hard grounding and evaluation really are. Decagon works on exactly those problems at enterprise scale, with a team that ships every week. I want to build that agent and evaluation layer for customers far larger than mine."

This answer works because every claim has proof. The product interest comes with a build. The ownership claim comes with a number. The direction is specific.

Where the Question Appears

Expect the motivation question in the recruiter screen first. It often returns in the behavioral round, in a deeper form. The second version asks for more evidence, not more enthusiasm. Keep the same core answer both times. Consistency itself is a signal. Add one new proof point in the later round, such as a detail from the product documentation. Interviewers compare notes, and a story that changes between rounds loses trust.

Common Mistakes

  • Generic AI excitement. An answer that fits any AI company fails here. Decagon is a customer support company first, and the answer must show that.
  • Asking for narrow scope. Decagon's "Polymath Principle" value asks engineers to cover many areas. Wanting one small, fixed lane reads as a mismatch.
  • No product contact. Decagon publishes demos, product pages, and engineering posts. Arriving without reading any of them looks unserious.
  • Ignoring the pace. Candidates and employees describe an intense, in-office culture. Say why you want that, with evidence from your own history.
