How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Myntra?"
The best answer connects fashion commerce at Indian scale to your own work. Myntra is an Indian fashion and lifestyle marketplace, and it is part of the Flipkart group. Its traffic is not steady, because sale events such as the End of Reason Sale and the Big Fashion Festival create very large peaks.
A strong answer proves three things. You must show that you understand this is a fashion business rather than a generic marketplace, that you have built systems which survived load or change, and that you want the ownership Myntra describes in its own words.
What the Interviewer Listens For
1. Real product knowledge. Myntra runs more than one shopping experience inside one app: FWD is a separate storefront aimed at younger shoppers, and M-Now is a fast delivery service that offers an order in about 30 minutes, started in Bengaluru. Naming one of these shows that you opened the app before the interview.
2. Comfort with peak traffic. Shoppers buy most heavily during a few sale events each year, and Myntra engineers write publicly about preparing the platform and the data systems for those events. An answer that mentions load testing, caching, or graceful degradation from your own work is convincing here.
3. Alignment with the stated culture. Myntra states on its careers site that ideas have no hierarchy, it describes the company as great together, and its published purpose is about expanding fashion possibilities for India. Tie your answer to one of these statements, and support it with an example.
4. A reason beyond the brand. Many candidates say only that Myntra is a well known Indian product company, which is a reason that fits fifty other companies equally well. Name the problem you want to work on instead: catalog and search, checkout and payments, personalization, or delivery.
A Three Part Structure
Part 1: The product reason (2 to 3 sentences). Say what draws you to fashion commerce, and add evidence, such as a feature you studied in the app.
Part 2: Your proof (2 to 3 sentences). Describe one system you built or owned, and include a number: requests per second, records stored, latency reduced, or cost reduced.
Part 3: The direction (1 to 2 sentences). Say which Myntra problem you want to work on next.
Sample Answer
"I want to work at Myntra because fashion is the hardest catalog problem in Indian e-commerce. A shirt has size, fit, color, and brand, and a recommendation is wrong if any one of them is wrong. In my current role I own the search service for a retail platform. I rebuilt its filter layer and cut the p95 response time by about 35 percent during our festive traffic. That work taught me how quickly a catalog query becomes expensive when attributes multiply. Myntra has the same problem at a much larger scale, and the End of Reason Sale makes it harder for a few days. I want to work on catalog search or personalization there."
The answer works because every claim has evidence: the interest comes with a technical reason, the skill claim comes with a number, and the direction names one area.
Where the Question Appears
The question appears first in the recruiter call, in a short form. It returns in the HR round in a longer form, and sometimes in the hiring manager round as well, although the later version asks for evidence rather than for more enthusiasm. Keep the same core answer each time, because interviewers share their feedback afterward, and add one new detail in the later round, such as a product feature you studied.
Common Mistakes
- Treating it as any marketplace. Fashion has returns, sizes, and trends that electronics do not, so an answer that ignores the category shows no research.
- Only praising the brand. Recognition is not a reason to join an engineering team, so name a technical problem instead.
- A weak services to product story. Many candidates come from IT services companies, and saying that the old work was boring makes a poor impression, so say what you owned, what you could not control, and what you want to own now.
- Claiming scale without evidence. If you mention peak traffic, bring a number from a system you actually ran.
- Ignoring the customer. Myntra sells to shoppers, not to developers, so include the user somewhere in your answer.
How to Prepare
- Learn the loop first. Read what the Myntra interview process is like so your story matches the round where the question appears.
- Use the same research twice. The product knowledge you gather here also serves the Myntra system design interview.
- Know the waiting times. Plan your other applications with how long it takes to hear back after a Myntra interview.
- Practice evidence-first delivery. Grokking Modern Behavioral Interview teaches answers built on proof rather than on adjectives.
- Read one engineering post. Myntra publishes engineering writing in public, and one specific reference makes your answer concrete.
