How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Shopee?"

Shopee's own recruiting blog says recruiters ask "why did you apply to join us?" to test a candidate's attitude. The same blog says the answer shows whether you are, in its words, "more of a giver or a taker". So the strongest answer connects one real Shopee problem to work you have already done. Shopee is the e-commerce platform of Sea Group, which sells across Southeast Asia and Taiwan and also operates in Brazil.

A good answer proves three things: that you know what Shopee actually runs, that you have built something real, and that you want to work at this scale and pace.

What the Interviewer Listens For

1. Knowledge of the real product. Shopee is more than a listings app, because it includes ShopeePay, a digital wallet, SPX Express, its own parcel delivery network, and Shopee Live, which is shopping through live video. Naming one specific part shows that you did real research.

2. Comfort with sale events on fixed dates. Shopee runs large sale campaigns on dates such as 9.9 and 11.11, which means buyers place most of the orders for popular items within hours rather than weeks. Say why that kind of load interests you, and give evidence.

3. The Sea values. Sea publishes five: We Serve, We Adapt, We Run, We Commit, and We Stay Humble. "We Run" is written as moving "faster, better, and with more urgency each day", while "We Adapt" treats rapid change as the normal condition. Show these through examples, not adjectives.

4. Interest in many markets at once. Shopee operates in several countries with different payment habits, languages, and delivery conditions, while engineers build one system that serves all of them. Curiosity about that constraint shows genuine interest.

A Three Part Structure

Part 1: The product opening (2 to 3 sentences). Name the Shopee product or problem that interests you, and give evidence that you looked at it closely.

Part 2: Your proof (2 to 3 sentences). Describe one thing you built that matches that problem. Include a number.

Part 3: The direction (1 to 2 sentences). Say what you want to build at Shopee.

Sample Answer

"I applied because Shopee has a problem I have already worked on in a smaller form: very many buyers ordering at the same time. I own the checkout service at my company, and our busiest hour has about 30 times our normal order rate. I rebuilt the stock reservation path to use an atomic counter in Redis, with the database write moved off the request. Overselling dropped to zero, and checkout stayed under 200 milliseconds through our last sale. Shopee has that same problem on dates such as 9.9, across many markets at the same time, which is a far harder version of mine. I also want to work closer to logistics, because SPX Express makes delivery part of the engineering problem instead of someone else's. That combination is why I applied to Shopee rather than to e-commerce in general."

This answer works because every claim has proof: the interest in scale includes a measured result, the product knowledge names real parts of the business, and the direction is specific enough to argue about.

Where the Question Appears

The question comes first in the HR screen, which candidates report as the opening call. Shopee's help page says the application form asks for your details and your resume, and it does not mention a written motivation question. So prepare this answer to be spoken rather than typed.

Expect the question again in the hiring manager or senior leader round, in a longer form. In that second version, give more evidence rather than more enthusiasm. Keep the same core answer both times, because interviewers share their written feedback afterward.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating it as any e-commerce job. An answer that fits any marketplace fails here. Name ShopeePay, SPX Express, Shopee Live, or the sale campaigns.
  • Leading with salary. Shopee's recruiting blog lists a compensation-first opening among the worst answers a candidate can give. Discuss pay later, with the recruiter.
  • Saying you need a job. The same blog names that answer directly as a weak one. Need is not motivation.
  • Saying any role is fine. Shopee's recruiters list open-ended flexibility as a negative signal. Pick the role, then defend the choice.
  • Claiming you want scale with no evidence. If you have never handled a traffic spike, say what you did handle, and what you have studied since.
