What Is the Shopee Interview Process Like? (Round by Round)
Candidates report four or five steps at Shopee over about two to four weeks, and the shape changes by office and by role. The process begins with a short HR call, followed by an online assessment that mixes multiple choice questions with coding problems. Then you have one or two technical interviews. A round with a hiring manager or a senior leader comes last.
Reported interview counts range from three to four. Shopee runs engineering teams in Singapore and across Southeast Asia, so ask your recruiter for your exact sequence of rounds.
Quick Overview
Candidate reports rarely state how long each round lasts, so only the reported lengths appear below.
| Stage | Format | What is evaluated |
|---|---|---|
| 1. HR or recruiter screen | Short call | Background, motivation, role and location fit |
| 2. Online assessment | Timed and remote, 70 minutes in one report | Algorithms plus computer science fundamentals |
| 3. Technical round 1 | Video, live coding | Coding, data structures, fundamentals questioning |
| 4. Technical round 2 | Video, 90 minutes in one report | System design, databases, and networks |
| 5. Hiring manager or senior leader | Video, or in the office | Past projects, judgment, and values fit |
Stage 1: HR or Recruiter Screen
A short call about your background, your interest, and your salary expectations. Shopee's own recruiting blog confirms that recruiters ask why you applied. Prepare that answer first with How to answer why Shopee.
Stage 2: Online Assessment
Candidates report a timed remote test before any live interview. One backend candidate in Singapore reports 12 questions in 70 minutes: 10 multiple choice questions and two coding problems. The two coding problems were reported at easy and medium difficulty. Other candidates report multiple choice questions on operating systems, computer networks, and databases.
Two published accounts name Glider as the test platform. No source confirms one standard tool, so ask the recruiter which one you will use. Treat the multiple choice half seriously, because algorithm practice alone does not cover it.
Stage 3: Technical Round 1
Live coding, usually on video. Candidates report problems at medium to hard difficulty. Reported examples include counting islands in a grid with depth first search, and finding the smallest window in a string that contains every character of another string. One candidate also reports a question on building a rate limiter over a rolling window.
A rate limiter is code that caps how many requests one caller may send in a period. Interviewers then ask about fundamentals: caching, Redis, database indexing, and transaction isolation levels. An isolation level sets how much unfinished work of one database transaction another transaction can see.
Stage 4: Technical Round 2
The second technical round is broader. One candidate for an SDE-2 role reports a 90 minute session with three parts. The first part was a design question about an authentication service, including how to store passwords. The second part covered how HTTP and TCP work, and the third was a second coding problem.
Candidates also report direct questions about microservices and how data is shared between them. The full topic list is in the Shopee system design interview.
Stage 5: Hiring Manager or Senior Leader Round
Some candidates call this the boss interview. Expect a close review of one project you owned. Reported questions cover debugging a problem in production, tracing high processor usage, reading from database replicas through a proxy service, and designing the data collection behind a metrics dashboard.
Sea Group, Shopee's parent company, publishes five values: We Serve, We Adapt, We Run, We Commit, and We Stay Humble. Read them before this round, and prepare one example of working fast and one of changing direction.
Timeline and Decision
Candidates report about two to four weeks end to end. Glassdoor reports an average near three weeks to hire for software engineer roles. Software engineer applicants rate the difficulty near 3.2 out of 5, and about half describe the experience as positive.
The common complaint in those reports is slow communication between rounds. Candidates describe waits of about a month after a round, and some report no reply at all. The common praise is friendly interviewers and a well organized process. Reported waiting times for each stage are in how long it takes to hear back.
Questions to Ask Them
Most rounds end with a few minutes for your questions. Use them. Strong questions here: which market or markets the team serves, how the team prepares for the large sale campaigns, and how on-call duty is shared.
Shopee runs scheduled sale events on dates such as 9.9 and 11.11, so ask what the weeks before one are like. Ask which services the team owns, and which language they are written in. A specific question also proves you read the job description.
How to Prepare
- Drill patterns, not puzzles. Grokking the Coding Interview teaches the patterns behind the medium and hard problems candidates report.
- Revise fundamentals in writing. Operating systems, networks, and databases appear in the assessment and again in the live rounds.
- Prepare for the design questions. Grokking the System Design Interview covers caching, queues, and sharding, which the reported topics all use.
- Write one project story in full. The manager round examines a single project, so prepare the decisions, the numbers, and the failures.
- Ask for your own loop. The number of rounds varies by office and level, so confirm it with the recruiter on the first call.
