How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Zalando?"

Zalando asks this question by name, in the first call. Zalando's hiring page says that first conversation is where the company learns about your motivation and your answer to "Why Zalando?". So the question is a stated goal of the stage, not small talk. A strong answer joins three things: a real part of Zalando's business, a value the company states in public, and evidence from your own work. Zalando is a fashion and lifestyle platform in Europe, and it runs both its own store and a marketplace for other brands. Name the part you care about.

What the Interviewer Listens For

1. Knowledge of the business, not only the store. Zalando sells its own assortment and also runs a Partner Program, where brands and retailers sell through Zalando while keeping control of their prices and their stock. Connected Retail lets a physical store ship an online order directly. ZEOS packages Zalando's logistics and software so other brands can run their own online business on it. Naming one of these shows real research.

2. A tie to a stated value. Zalando describes a set of principles it calls the Founding Mindset, and the four named parts are customer focus, entrepreneurial thinking, speed, and empowerment. Pick one and prove it with a story, instead of repeating the word.

3. Interest in the engineering problems. Zalando replaced one large Java application with many small services, and it writes about the result in public. Nakadi, its own event broker, carries events between those services, and anyone can read its code and its documentation. Its RESTful API guidelines are public as well, and API first is a stated principle. API first means the interface is designed and reviewed before the code is written. Curiosity about this kind of work counts for more than general praise.

4. A clear reason for Europe and for English. Zalando's headquarters is in Berlin, and its main business language is English. If you would relocate, say why Europe and why Berlin. Recruiters ask about this directly, so prepare a plain answer.

A Three Part Structure

Part 1: The business hook (2 to 3 sentences). Say which part of Zalando interests you, and name it exactly.

Part 2: Your proof (2 to 3 sentences). Describe one thing you built that matches that part, and include a number.

Part 3: The direction (1 to 2 sentences). Say what you want to build at Zalando next.

Sample Answer

"I want to work at Zalando because the marketplace side is the harder part of the business. Zalando sells its own assortment and also sells for thousands of partner brands, so stock, prices, and delivery promises are set by many different owners at once. At my last job I built the inventory service for a retailer with 40 physical stores, and I had to keep store stock and online stock in agreement within one minute. That work reduced oversold orders by about 70 percent. While preparing, I read Zalando's public API guidelines and recognized the same problems my own service had. I want to work on partner stock and delivery promises at a scale my old system never reached."

This answer works because every claim includes proof. The business interest names a real part of Zalando, the experience claim ends in a number, and the direction is specific enough to argue about.

Where the Question Appears

The question appears first in the Talent Acquisition Partner call, as a stated goal of that stage. It often returns in the hiring manager interview in a longer form. The second version asks for evidence, not for more enthusiasm.

Keep the same core answer in both rounds, because interviewers share their written feedback with each other. Add one new detail the second time, such as a post from the engineering blog. The full set of rounds is listed in the Zalando interview process.

Common Mistakes

  • Praising the brand only. Enjoying the shopping app is not a reason to hire an engineer, so name a technical or business problem instead.
  • A generic retail answer. An answer that fits any online shop fails here, which means you should name the marketplace and the logistics product that Zalando runs.
  • Ignoring the stated values. The Founding Mindset names speed and empowerment, so if you want long approval chains before every change, the mismatch is real and the interviewer will find it.
  • No reason for the location. Relocation to Berlin is part of many of these hires, so a candidate with no answer about it appears undecided.
  • Using values as adjectives. Saying you are customer focused proves nothing, so tell the story where a customer complaint changed your design.

How to Prepare

  • Research once and use it twice. The same product knowledge serves the Zalando system design interview, where the questions follow the company's own problems.
  • Prepare for the wait as well. What happens after each round is described in how long it takes to hear back.
  • Build the answer on evidence. Grokking Modern Behavioral Interview teaches answers built on proof instead of adjectives.
  • Read two engineering posts. One specific reference from Zalando's own writing makes the answer concrete.
  • Rehearse the short version. Deliver the whole answer in under 90 seconds, then stop and let the interviewer ask for more.
