How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Zepto?"
The strongest answer connects one Zepto engineering problem to work you have already done. Zepto is a quick commerce company in India that delivers groceries and daily items in about ten minutes from dark stores, which are small warehouses that serve online orders only.
Name the part of that system you want to work on, and say what is difficult about it. Then show one thing you built that proves you can help, because enthusiasm about fast delivery is not an answer.
What the Interviewer Listens For
1. Real product knowledge. Zepto is more than one application: it runs the consumer grocery service, Zepto Cafe for prepared food and drinks from the same dark stores, and an analytics product that gives consumer brands data about their own sales. Candidates who name only the brand sound less prepared than candidates who name one product area.
2. Interest in time bound systems. A ten minute promise makes ordinary problems difficult, because stock counts must be correct across every store and orders must reach the right dark store immediately. Curiosity about these constraints shows genuine interest in the work.
3. A match with the company's approach. Accounts of Zepto's culture describe first principles thinking, which means reasoning from the basic facts rather than copying an existing model. The founders also describe customer experience as the reason for the ten minute model, because customers returned more often when delivery took ten to fifteen minutes instead of forty five. Connect your story to one of these, not to both.
4. Honest interest in the pace. Candidates and employees describe long hours and high intensity, and interviewers want people who chose that knowingly. Say why the pace suits you, with evidence from your own history.
A Three Part Structure
Part 1: The product reason (2 to 3 sentences). Name the Zepto product area that interests you and the problem inside it.
Part 2: Your proof (2 to 3 sentences). Describe one system you owned that is close to that problem. Include a number.
Part 3: The direction (1 to 2 sentences). Say what you want to build at Zepto next.
Sample Answer
"I want to work on Zepto's inventory and order routing systems, because a ten minute promise makes stock accuracy an engineering problem rather than an operations problem. At my current company I own the stock service for a retail platform with warehouses in four cities. I rebuilt the reservation flow so that two orders can never hold the same unit, which reduced oversold items by about 70 percent. I also handled the difficult cases: partial cancellations, returns, and manual corrections by store staff. Zepto runs that same problem across many dark stores, with delivery measured in minutes rather than days. I want to work on the layer that decides which store serves an order and whether the stock is really there."
This answer works because every claim has proof: the product interest names one system, the ownership claim includes a number, and the direction is specific enough to be checked.
Where the Question Appears
Expect a short version early, in the recruiter conversation. A longer version appears in the hiring manager round, where candidates report a direct discussion of their reasons for applying. Candidates also report the question in the HR round, in the plain form "why do you want to join Zepto".
Keep the same core answer in each round, because interviewers compare written notes. Add one new detail later, such as a product change you noticed as a user.
Common Mistakes
- The "I order from Zepto daily" answer. Being a customer is not a reason to be hired, so turn the observation into a technical question instead.
- No answer for leaving a services job. If you come from a service-based company, prepare this directly, and name the work you want to own end to end that your current role does not give you.
- Ignoring the hours. Pretending the pace does not exist shows that you did not research the company, so address it and say why it suits you now.
- Naming no product area. A candidate who cannot choose between the consumer application, the catalog, the store systems, and logistics sounds undecided.
- Criticizing competitors. Comparing Zepto with other quick commerce companies adds nothing, and interviewers often record it against you.
How to Prepare
- Study the loop first. Read the Zepto interview process so your story matches the round where the question is asked.
- Reuse your product research. The same reading serves the Zepto system design interview, so study once and use it twice.
- Practice evidence-first answers. Grokking Modern Behavioral Interview teaches stories built on evidence rather than adjectives.
- Know the schedule. You answer better when the wait is not worrying you, and how long it takes to hear back has the reported numbers.
