Top Brex Behavioral Interview Questions (and How to Answer Them)

Brex behavioral questions test four themes: ownership, customer obsession, bias for action, and simplicity. These match the values Brex publishes. The company runs a dedicated values interview, a structured round about your real past behavior. Candidates report that this round can decide the offer by itself. Prepare two specific stories per theme, each with a measurable result.

Quick Overview

ThemeWhat it testsExample question
OwnershipResponsibility from start to finishA project you owned completely
Customer obsessionDecisions guided by usersA change made for user feedback
Bias for actionDeciding without full informationA fast decision and its cost
SimplicityRemoving complexityA system you simplified
TeamworkConflict and communicationA disagreement and its outcome

Ownership Questions

  1. Tell me about a project you owned from start to finish.
  2. Describe a time you fixed a problem that was not assigned to you.

Interviewers listen for the word "I" backed by real actions. Say what you decided, not what the team decided. End with the result and what you learned.

Customer Obsession Questions

  1. Tell me about a time you changed a design because of user feedback.
  2. Describe a decision where you chose the customer's need over the easier technical option.

Brex sells to finance teams and founders. Answers that mention real users, their complaints, and the fix are the answers that pass. Numbers help: tickets reduced, time saved, errors removed.

Bias for Action Questions

  1. Tell me about a time you made a decision without full information.
  2. Describe a time you shipped fast and what you gave up for the speed.

The interviewer wants judgment, not recklessness. Explain what you knew, what you assumed, and how you limited the risk. Then state the outcome honestly, even if it was mixed.

Simplicity Questions

  1. Tell me about a time you simplified a complex system.
  2. Describe a time you argued against adding a new tool or service.

One Brex value states that complexity is the enemy. Stories about deleting code, merging services, or rejecting a new dependency fit this theme well. Explain the cost of the complexity and the gain from removing it.

Teamwork Questions

  1. Tell me about a conflict with a teammate and how it ended.
  2. Describe a time you disagreed with your manager and what you did.

Show respect for the other person and focus on the work. The best endings include a concrete resolution and a better process afterward.

Worked Sample Outline

The most important question is the first one: a project you owned from start to finish. Build it with STAR. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result.

  • Situation. "Our expense reports took finance three days to close each month."
  • Task. "I proposed and owned an automation service to match receipts to transactions."
  • Action. "I designed the matching rules, built the service, and ran the rollout with the finance team."
  • Result. "Closing time went from three days to four hours, and I still owned the service afterward."

Keep each part short. The result must have a number. Practice saying it in under two minutes.

Expect follow up questions after the outline. Interviewers often ask what you would do differently now. Prepare one honest improvement for each story. A candidate who names a real mistake sounds more credible than one who claims a perfect record.
