Top Redis Behavioral Interview Questions (and How to Answer Them)

Prepare stories in four groups: ownership, teamwork, customer focus, and learning. Behavioral questions at Redis appear in the HR calls, the hiring manager round, and inside technical interviews. The company describes curiosity and quick action as parts of its culture. So examples about learning fast and acting without complete instructions work well. Structure every story with the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Below are ten questions with guidance for each group.

How the Behavioral Evaluation Works

There is no single behavioral round in most candidate reports. Instead, behavioral questions are spread across the process. The recruiter asks about motivation. The hiring manager or group manager asks about teamwork and ownership. Technical interviewers ask short behavioral questions about the projects you mention. This means one strong story can be told twice to different people. Prepare six stories and you can answer almost any question below.

Ownership and Delivery

  1. Tell me about a production problem you solved under time pressure.
  2. Describe a project where you were responsible for the whole result.
  3. Tell me about a mistake you made that affected users.

The interviewer listens for what you did personally, not what your team did. Give numbers: minutes of downtime, percent improvement, number of users affected. For the mistake question, spend most of your time on the fix and the prevention.

Teamwork and Communication

  1. Tell me about a technical disagreement with a teammate.
  2. How have you worked with colleagues in other offices or time zones?
  3. Describe a time you explained a complex system to a non-expert.

The company has engineering teams in several countries, so question five is common. Show respect for the other side of any disagreement. Then explain how the decision was made: with data, a test, or a clear owner. A good disagreement story ends with the team in agreement, not with you proven right.

Customer Focus

  1. Tell me about a time user feedback changed your technical plan.
  2. Describe a support issue that taught you something about your own system.

Connect your engineering choices to what users experienced. Customers choose a database company for reliability, so reliability stories fit well here. If you have worked on-call, describe how incident reports changed your priorities.

Learning and Motivation

  1. What have you learned recently outside your daily work?
  2. Why do you want to work at Redis?

For question nine, pick something technical and recent. A course, a paper, or a small project all work. Explain what surprised you in it. Curiosity is a stated company value, so a real example here counts more than at most companies.

Question ten needs its own preparation. How to answer "Why do you want to work at Redis?" gives a full structure and a sample answer.

A Worked Sample Answer

Question one is the most important, so here is an outline.

  • Situation: "Our checkout service began timing out during a sales event. The cache cluster had lost a node."
  • Task: "I was on call and owned the fix. Every minute cost real orders."
  • Action: "I shifted traffic to the healthy replicas and raised the memory limit. Then I found the root cause: an eviction setting that removed hot keys."
  • Result: "Checkout recovered in 18 minutes. I wrote a runbook and an alert, and the problem never repeated."

Keep each part short. The action section should be the longest, and it should contain the word "I" more than "we".

Two details make this outline work. First, the numbers: 18 minutes, one root cause, zero repeats. Second, the ending: the story ends with prevention, which shows ownership beyond the incident. Practice saying the whole answer in about two minutes. Longer answers waste your limited interview time, and shorter ones skip the evidence.
