How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Redis?"

Connect three things: your real use of Redis, the company's current direction, and the work you want to do there. Redis is the company behind the open source in-memory database with the same name. An in-memory database keeps data in main memory instead of on disk, so it responds very fast. The company also sells Redis Enterprise and Redis Cloud, the managed versions for large customers. Most engineers have already used the database. So the interviewer expects a specific story, not general praise.

Why This Question Is Different at Redis

Millions of developers use the product for caching, queues, and session storage. Saying "I like Redis" gives the interviewer no information. They want to know what you built with it and what you noticed. One concrete detail makes your answer memorable. A latency number works. So does a failure you debugged at two in the morning.

If you have never used the database, start with What is Redis?. Learn the basics before you talk about motivation.

There is a second difference. Redis is both an open source project and a business. The interviewer works for the business. So a complete answer mentions the company side: the managed cloud service, enterprise customers, and the growth into AI workloads. Candidates who only talk about the free tool miss half of the picture.

Where the Question Appears

Expect this question early. Candidates report that the first HR call asks about motivation directly. The hiring manager round often repeats it in a different form, such as "what do you want to do here". Prepare one answer and reuse its core in both places.

What the Interviewer Is Listening For

  1. Real product experience. Name the systems where you used Redis and the results you measured.
  2. Interest in the current direction. The company now invests in search, vector data, and AI workloads. Vector data is the number format AI models use to compare meaning. Mentioning this direction shows you researched the company, not only the database.
  3. A fit with the team. Core database work uses languages like C and Rust. Cloud platform work is closer to Go, Python, and Kubernetes, the standard tool for running containers. Say which side fits your background.
  4. Curiosity and speed. The company describes curiosity and quick action as parts of its culture. Stories about learning something deeply match this well.

A Three-Part Structure

Part 1: Your history with the product (2 to 3 sentences). What you built with Redis and one measured result.

Part 2: Your reason for the company itself (2 to 3 sentences). Why building the database interests you more than using it. Add one point about the current direction, like vector search.

Part 3: The work you want (1 to 2 sentences). The team or problem area you want to join, and why your skills fit it.

Sample Answer

"I have used Redis in production for six years, first as a cache and later as a job queue. At my current company I moved our session store to Redis and cut average page load time by about 30 percent. That project made me curious about the inside of the database, so I read the cluster documentation and parts of the source code. I want to work on the systems I have only used from the outside, like replication and failover. I am also interested in the growth into vector search, because my last project added AI features to a search product. My background in C and distributed systems fits the core database team. That is why Redis is my first choice, not one option on a list."

Common Mistakes

  • Praising the database and ignoring the company. The interviewer works for a business. Talk about the managed products and the direction, not only the open source tool.
  • No specifics. An answer without project names or numbers sounds like it was written for any company.
  • Outdated knowledge. Talking only about caching suggests you stopped reading about Redis years ago.
  • A wrong team match. Asking for low-level C work while interviewing for a cloud platform role shows poor research. Read the job posting again the night before, and match your answer to it.
  • Memorized delivery. Interviewers ask follow-up questions like "which part of the documentation did you read". A rehearsed script with no real experience behind it fails on the first follow-up.
