What Is the Abridge Interview Process Like? (Round by Round)

Candidates report four main steps at Abridge. First comes a recruiter screen. Second is a hiring manager round about your experience, often with a short design discussion. Third is a virtual onsite of about three technical rounds. Candidates report a coding round, a system design round, and a practical round tied to the product. Fourth is a behavioral round, sometimes with an engineering executive. Candidates report about a month from start to finish. Abridge is a young company, so the loop varies by team and level.

Quick Overview

StageFormatWhat is evaluated
1. Recruiter screenAbout 30 minutes, callBackground, motivation, mission interest
2. Hiring manager round45 to 60 minutesExperience, plus a short design discussion
3. Coding roundAbout 60 minutes, liveData structures and algorithms
4. System design roundAbout 60 minutesA design problem tied to the product
5. Practical roundAbout 60 minutesApplied coding, AI, or frontend by role
6. Behavioral round30 to 60 minutesMission fit, collaboration, leadership review

Stage 1: Recruiter Screen

A short call on background and motivation. Abridge screens for mission alignment early. Prepare the healthcare part of your story with How to answer why Abridge.

Stage 2: Hiring Manager Round

Candidates report a conversation about past work plus a small design exercise. The exercise is often close to the product, such as a pipeline that processes conversations. Treat it as a preview of the real design round. Answer with structure: requirements first, then components, then trade-offs.

Stage 3: The Coding Round

A standard data structures and algorithms round. Candidates rate the overall difficulty as moderate, near the middle of the scale. Interviewers are described as friendly and willing to give hints. That does not lower the bar. Candidates also report that the process is very selective, so practice until medium problems feel routine.

Stage 4: The System Design Round

The design questions follow the product. One reported question asked candidates to design a clinical tool execution service. The interviewer provided partial code stubs, and the candidate filled in the critical parts. Expect audio pipelines, medical transcription, and note generation as themes. The full topic list is in What to expect in the Abridge system design interview.

Stage 5: The Practical Round

This round changes by role. Software candidates report an applied coding session, sometimes AI related. Frontend candidates report a frontend build instead. The common thread is working code for a realistic task, not a puzzle.

Stage 6: The Behavioral Round

Often held with senior leadership, sometimes a vice president of engineering. The themes are mission fit, collaboration with clinicians, and quality under ambiguity. See Top Abridge behavioral interview questions for the questions and answer plans.

Timeline and Communication

Candidates report about a month for the full loop. The company states that candidates should never wait more than five days for an update. Some candidates describe the process as calm and well run. Others describe stretches of silence, so ask each interviewer about next steps.

Questions to Ask Them

Save two or three questions for the end of each round. Strong options here: how note quality is measured, how clinician feedback reaches engineers, and what a model release process looks like under health data rules. Ask the hiring manager how engineers work with the practicing doctors on staff. These questions show you understand what makes this company different from a general AI company.

How to Prepare

  • Make medium problems routine. Grokking the Coding Interview teaches the patterns the coding round draws from.
  • Practice pipeline design. Grokking the System Design Interview covers the streaming and storage blocks the product questions use.
  • Prepare the mission story early. It appears in the first call and again at the end.
  • Read the product pages. Candidates report questions tied to the real product, so product knowledge is technical preparation here.
