How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Abridge?"

The best answer shows real interest in healthcare, not just in AI. Abridge builds ambient AI for clinical documentation. Ambient means the software listens to a normal doctor and patient conversation in the background. It then writes the structured medical note the doctor would otherwise type at night. Abridge screens for mission alignment on purpose. Its stated mission is to bring understanding and follow-through to every medical conversation. A generic AI answer fails here. A healthcare answer with personal evidence succeeds.

What the Interviewer Listens For

1. A real reason for healthcare. The company was founded by a cardiologist who still sees patients. Many employees name clinician burnout as their reason for joining. Burnout here means doctors spending hours each night on notes instead of rest. Your reason can be a family experience, clinical exposure, or work on health data. It must be yours and it must be specific.

2. Respect for accuracy. A medical note feeds real treatment decisions. An invented medication in a note is not a bug ticket, it is a patient risk. Interviewers listen for engineers who treat quality as part of the product.

3. Product knowledge. Abridge generates structured notes in the SOAP format. SOAP stands for Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan, the standard note layout doctors use. The product writes into the electronic health record, the system hospitals use to store patient data. Naming these specifics shows real research.

4. Comfort with clinicians as partners. Abridge teams mix engineers, AI scientists, and practicing doctors. Show that you can take direction from a domain expert without friction.

A Three Part Structure

Part 1: The healthcare hook (2 to 3 sentences). Your personal reason for working on clinical software.

Part 2: Your proof (2 to 3 sentences). One system you built that needed high accuracy or careful handling of data. Include a number.

Part 3: The direction (1 to 2 sentences). What you want to build at Abridge.

Sample Answer

"I want to work at Abridge because I watched my mother's doctor type through her whole appointment. That visit convinced me the note, not the medicine, was stealing the doctor's attention. In my current role I build speech pipelines, and I cut our transcription error rate by 30 percent on noisy audio. I learned how hard real conversations are: cross-talk, accents, and words the model has never seen. Medical conversations are the hardest version of that problem, and Abridge is the team treating it seriously. I want to work on the pipeline that turns those conversations into notes a doctor can trust."

Six sentences, one personal reason, one number, one specific target. That is the full formula.

Where the Question Appears

The recruiter screen asks it first, in a short form. The behavioral round asks it again, often with senior leadership present. The later version digs into the healthcare part. Expect follow-up questions like "what does clinician burnout actually look like". Prepare one concrete detail for that: doctors report hours of note work after clinic ends. Keep your core answer identical across rounds. A motivation story that shifts between interviewers reads as rehearsed for effect, not real.

Common Mistakes

  • The generic AI answer. If your answer also fits a chatbot company, it fails. The healthcare mission is the filter.
  • Treating medicine as just data. Interviewers notice candidates who see patients as rows. Show that you understand the stakes of a wrong note.
  • No product contact. Abridge publishes detailed product pages and clinician stories. Read them and reference one detail.
  • Overclaiming clinical knowledge. You are not expected to know medicine. You are expected to respect the people who do.
