What Is the Affirm Interview Process Like? (Round by Round)

Affirm interviews software engineers in three stages over three to five weeks. First a recruiter screen of about 30 minutes. Then a technical screen and a hiring manager chat. Then a virtual onsite of four to five rounds. The onsite includes practical coding, a system design round for senior roles, and a behavioral conversation. Candidates report practical tasks rather than puzzle style algorithm questions.

Quick Overview

StageFormatWhat is evaluated
1. Recruiter screenAbout 30 minutes, callBackground, motivation, logistics
2. Technical screen60 to 90 minutes, HackerRankCoding on a practical problem
3. Hiring manager chat45 to 60 minutesProjects, decisions, team match
4. Virtual onsiteFour to five roundsCoding, design, behavior

Stage 1: Recruiter Screen

A conversational call of about 30 minutes. The recruiter asks about your background, your interest in Affirm, and logistics such as location. Answer plainly and keep notes, because later interviewers read the summary. Prepare a short summary of your experience. Also prepare your motivation answer, because it appears here first. A full guide is in How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Affirm?".

Stage 2: Technical Screen

The screen runs 60 to 90 minutes on HackerRank, an online coding platform. Candidates generally choose between a live session with an engineer or a take home exercise. A take home is a task you complete on your own time. The problems are practical. Expect data handling, small services, and code that must actually run. Clean working code beats a clever half solution. Test your code before calling it done, because the graders run it.

Stage 3: Hiring Manager Chat

A 45 to 60 minute conversation with the manager of the hiring team. It goes deep on your past projects and technical decisions. The manager also checks how your experience matches the team's current needs. Ask questions here. The conversation is two sided, and real curiosity about the team reads well.

Stage 4: Virtual Onsite

The onsite has four to five rounds, in one day or split over two. Candidates report two practical coding sessions, a system design round for senior roles, and a behavioral conversation. The coding sessions often involve editing an existing codebase rather than writing from a blank page. Practice reading unfamiliar code quickly.

The behavioral round maps your stories to Affirm's values: trust, transparency, and putting people first. The full question list is in Top Affirm Behavioral Interview Questions (and How to Answer Them). The design round uses financial problems such as ledgers and payment pipelines. See What to Expect in the Affirm System Design Interview for the question types.

What Makes the Affirm Loop Different

Two things separate Affirm's process from a standard big company loop. First, the coding is practical. You edit real code, handle real data, and explain your choices. Second, the values conversation is genuine evaluation, not a formality. Interviewers compare your stories against trust, transparency, and people first. Candidates report that cultural fit carries real weight in the final decision.

The choice between a live screen and a take home is also unusual. Pick the format where you perform better. Neither choice is penalized.

Timeline

The full process usually takes three to five weeks. Scheduling the onsite is the slowest step for most candidates. Ask the recruiter for the round order early, then plan your preparation around it. Doing the onsite over two days gives you recovery time between rounds.

How to Prepare

  • Practice practical coding in a real editor. Build something small that parses data and calls an API, the interface one program uses to request work from another. Grokking the Coding Interview keeps the pattern skills ready for the screen.
  • Prepare project stories for the manager chat. Choose projects where you made the decisions. Write down the tradeoffs and the results.
  • Draft behavioral stories early. Two stories per value, each with a measurable result.
  • Rehearse reading unknown code. Open an unfamiliar open source file and explain it aloud in five minutes. The onsite coding rounds reward this exact skill, and few candidates practice it.
