IBM Dress Code: What Employees Wear to the Office

IBM has no uniform and no single company-wide dress rule. Each office sets the norm, and managers follow it.

The written standard in most locations is business casual. Business casual means a collared shirt or a blouse, with trousers, chinos or a skirt.

Many engineering and delivery sites are more relaxed than that. Employees report that jeans with a plain t-shirt or a polo are normal there.

Is there an IBM uniform?

No. IBM does not issue clothing to office employees.

The IBM blue suit, and why it is gone

IBM was once known for a strict look. Men wore a dark suit, a white shirt and a plain tie.

That is where the phrase "IBM blue suits" comes from. The company retired the rule decades ago.

The change was deliberate. IBM moved to dressing for the customer rather than dressing to a company standard.

You will still see suits inside IBM. They appear on consulting and sales days, not on ordinary office days.

Is the dress code different for women?

No. IBM applies one standard to everyone.

Blouses, tops, trousers, skirts and dresses all fit the business casual standard. Skirt or dress length is left to your judgement.

Shoes are the one place site rules appear. A lab or a data center may require closed shoes for safety.

IBM offices in India

Indian sites follow the same business casual standard. Employees report that this is applied a little more formally than in United States offices.

A common pattern in Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Kolkata looks like this. Formal shirts and trousers on weekdays, and relaxed clothing on Friday.

Teams that meet clients dress up further. Teams on internal delivery work often wear jeans all week.

Ask your manager in your first week. Local practice varies by site and by account.

What this means for an interview

An interview is not an ordinary office day. Dress one level above the team you are joining.
