What Is the Rivian Interview Process Like? (Round by Round)

The Rivian software engineering interview has three stages. It starts with a recruiter screen of about 30 minutes. Next comes a technical phone screen of about 60 minutes. The final stage is a virtual onsite of four to five rounds. The onsite usually includes a coding round, a system design round, a behavioral round, and a hiring manager round. Candidates report that the whole process is organized and often finishes within one to two weeks. They also report that the technical bar is practical rather than puzzle-heavy, while the behavioral evaluation is strict.

Quick Overview

Recruiter Screen

A recruiter spends about 30 minutes on your background and the role. Expect a direct question about why you want to work in the electric vehicle space. Have a two-sentence answer ready. The recruiter also confirms location, work authorization, and timeline.

Technical Phone Screen

This round runs about 60 minutes in a collaborative coding editor such as CoderPad. Most candidates report one medium-difficulty algorithm problem. Some report a domain-relevant task instead: a concurrency problem for backend roles, or a React component for frontend roles. Concurrency means several tasks running at the same time and sharing data safely.

Talk while you code. The interviewer grades your reasoning, your test cases, and your edge case handling, not only the final result.

The Virtual Onsite

The onsite is the main loop. It usually runs four to five rounds over video in a single day or across a few days.

Coding (about 60 minutes). Similar difficulty to the phone screen, with more follow-up questions. Practical correctness matters more than a clever trick.

System design (about 60 minutes). Rivian's design questions connect to its vehicles. Reported topics include telemetry pipelines, over-the-air update systems (software updates sent to vehicles remotely), charging network backends, and battery health monitoring. Interviewers ask for APIs, database schema, and data flow, then question your trade-offs. What to Expect in the Rivian System Design Interview breaks this round down in detail.

Behavioral (about 45 minutes). Structured questions about deadlines, conflict, and failure. Rivian weighs this round heavily. Candidates report rejections after strong technical performance because the person seemed arrogant or hard to work with. Top Rivian Behavioral Interview Questions (and How to Answer Them) lists the questions to expect.

Hiring manager (about 45 minutes). A mix of role discussion and motivation. Prepare a clear answer to the motivation question using How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Rivian?".

What Rivian Screens For

Three themes repeat across candidate reports. First, practical coding: working, tested code on medium problems. Second, automotive-aware design: systems that keep working when a vehicle loses network coverage. Third, collaboration: the company builds physical products, so software engineers work with hardware and manufacturing teams every week.

Timeline and Logistics

Candidates report a fast and organized process, often one to two weeks from recruiter screen to decision. Response times between stages are usually a few days. If you interview for a senior role, expect the system design and manager rounds to carry more weight.

How to Prepare

  • Drill medium coding problems by pattern. Grokking the Coding Interview teaches the reusable patterns behind most medium problems, which fits Rivian's practical style.
  • Practice design questions about device data. Telemetry, updates, and charging are data-flow problems. Grokking the System Design Interview gives you the building blocks.
  • Prepare five stories for the behavioral round. Pick stories about deadlines, conflict, failure, learning, and ownership. Write each with a measurable result.
  • Know your motivation. The manager round always reaches the "why Rivian" question. Prepare a specific, personal answer.
