Top Rivian Behavioral Interview Questions (and How to Answer Them)

Rivian's behavioral round is about 45 minutes and focuses on deadlines, teamwork, resilience, and motivation. The company takes this round seriously. Candidates report rejections after strong technical rounds because the person sounded arrogant or uncollaborative. Below are ten questions to prepare, grouped by theme. The first two come directly from candidate reports. The rest are standard forms of the themes Rivian screens for.

Deadlines and Pressure

1. Tell me about a time you worked on a project with a tight deadline. How did you manage your time and resources? Candidates report this question. The interviewer wants a plan, not heroics. Describe how you cut scope, ordered the work, and communicated risk early.

2. Tell me about a time priorities changed suddenly. What did you do? Vehicle programs shift often. Show that you re-planned calmly and kept your team informed.

Teamwork and Conflict

3. Describe a situation where you had to collaborate with a difficult team member. Candidates report this question. Do not attack the other person. Explain their view, what you changed in your own behavior, and the working result.

4. Tell me about a technical disagreement with a teammate or manager. How was it resolved? Rivian builds physical products, so software engineers argue trade-offs with hardware and manufacturing teams. Show that you used data, not volume, and accepted the outcome.

5. Tell me about a time you worked with people outside software, such as hardware or operations. If you have cross-discipline experience, use it here. It maps directly to Rivian's daily work.

Resilience and Ownership

6. Tell me about a project that failed. What did you do next? Rivian screens for resilience and adaptability. Own the failure plainly, name the cause, and show the fix you carried into later work.

7. Describe a time you received hard feedback. How did you respond? The interviewer is testing for ego. A specific story about changing your behavior beats a vague claim of openness.

8. Tell me about a time you took responsibility for a problem outside your role. Ownership is a strong positive signal here. Pick a story where you noticed a gap, acted, and measured the result.

Motivation

9. Why do you want to work at Rivian? This question appears in the recruiter screen and again with the hiring manager. Build your answer with How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Rivian?".

10. Why electric vehicles, and why now? Interviewers prefer a personal, specific reason over industry praise. One real experience with an EV or charging is enough.

What Rivian Listens For

Across all ten questions, interviewers listen for four things. A clear structure with a real result at the end. Credit given to teammates. Calm behavior under pressure. And a genuine reason to be at an electric vehicle company. Humility matters more here than at most technology companies. Keep every answer under three minutes. Long answers read as poor communication in this round.

Worked Sample Outline

Use the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Here is an outline for question 1, the tight deadline.

  • Situation. "Our team had six weeks to deliver a data export feature for a customer contract. Two weeks in, a dependency slipped."
  • Task. "I owned the delivery plan and had to protect the date."
  • Action. "I cut the scope to the two export formats the customer actually used. I moved one engineer to unblock the dependency. I sent a risk update to the customer team every Friday."
  • Result. "We shipped on time. The customer used the feature in their launch, and the two dropped formats were never requested."

Keep each part to two or three sentences. End with a number or a concrete outcome every time.
