What Is the Wise Interview Process Like? (Round by Round)

Expect a recruiter call, a technical task, two or three live interviews, and a final values conversation. Wise describes its engineering interviews on its own careers site, and candidate reports match that shape. The technical task is an online coding test or a take-home assignment of about three to six hours. A take-home assignment is a coding task you complete on your own schedule. Live interviews include a technical session that often uses pair programming, a system design interview for senior roles, and a product conversation. The whole process usually takes a few weeks.

The order and count vary by role and location. Junior processes test coding more. Senior and lead processes add system design and questions about leading work beyond your own tasks. Candidates report a few weeks from application to decision in most cases. Your recruiter will confirm the exact stages for your role, so ask in the first call.

The Recruiter Call

A 30 minute conversation about your background and your reasons for applying. The recruiter also explains the stages for your specific role. Prepare a short answer about the mission, because the question appears this early. Ask about timing and interviewers, and write the answers down. How to answer "Why do you want to work at Wise?" gives a structure and a sample.

The Technical Task

Candidates report two versions. Some roles get an online test of about 90 minutes, mixing multiple choice and coding questions, sometimes including SQL. Other roles get a take-home task scoped to three to six hours, with a week or more to finish. Some candidates report they could submit an existing personal project instead of the take-home. Reviewers read for production habits: tests, error handling, and clear naming. Money software must be correct, so a small correct solution scores better than a large fragile one. Include a short readme that explains your decisions and what you would add with more time. The live interviews often start with questions about this task, so review your own code the night before.

The Live Technical Interviews

The coding interview often uses pair programming: you and the interviewer write code together and talk while you work. The problems are practical and shaped like Wise work, such as processing transactions or handling currency amounts. The interviewer evaluates collaboration as much as the solution, so explain your thinking while you type. The system design interview follows the same idea. You design a system for a business case rather than answering abstract trivia. What to expect in the Wise system design interview works one full example.

The Product and Values Conversations

The product interview is a discussion with a product manager. Expect questions about product decisions you influenced and how you compare customer needs against technical cost. Good preparation: use the app, note two things you would improve, and be ready to defend them. This round rejects candidates who see engineering as separate from the product.

The values conversation ends the process. It tests mission fit, ownership, and how you work with others. Answers should be honest and specific, because transparency is the company's core value. Prepare stories using Top Wise behavioral interview questions.

How to Prepare

  • Practice coding by pattern. Grokking the Coding Interview teaches the reusable patterns behind practical coding questions.
  • Learn design fundamentals. Grokking the System Design Interview explains the building blocks the business-case round assumes.
  • Rehearse pair programming. Solve two problems while explaining every step aloud to a friend. Silence is the most common pair programming failure.
  • Use the product. Open the app, check the fee calculator, and send a small transfer if you can. Product questions become much easier afterward.
