Top Wise Behavioral Interview Questions (and How to Answer Them)

Prepare stories in four groups: mission and customers, ownership, teamwork, and mistakes. Wise runs a product interview and a values conversation in addition to technical rounds. So behavioral preparation matters more here than at many technology companies. The company values autonomy: teams choose their own work and own the results. Structure every story with the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Below are ten questions with guidance for each group.

How the Rounds Use These Questions

Three parts of the process ask behavioral questions. The recruiter call tests motivation. The product interview, run by a product manager, asks about customer thinking and product decisions. The final values conversation asks about ownership, teamwork, and mistakes. Some technical interviewers add behavioral follow-ups about the projects you mention. Six prepared stories with numbers are enough for all of it.

Mission and Customers

  1. Why do you want to work at Wise?
  2. Tell me about a product decision you influenced as an engineer.
  3. Describe a time you chose a customer's need over the easier technical option.

Question one appears early and needs its own preparation. How to answer "Why do you want to work at Wise?" gives a full structure and a sample. For questions two and three, name the customer effect with a number: conversion, complaints, or speed. If you have never influenced a product decision, use a smaller example. Choosing an error message, a default value, or a retry rule is product work too.

Ownership and Autonomy

  1. Describe a project you led with very little direction.
  2. Tell me about a time you disagreed with your team's plan.
  3. Tell me about a time you missed a deadline.

Wise teams are autonomous, so interviewers test whether you can act without instructions. Show that you defined the problem, made a decision, and accepted the result. A story where you waited for permission answers the question badly, even with a good ending. For the deadline question, explain what you told people and when. Silence before a missed deadline is the real failure.

Teamwork and Communication

  1. How do you handle feedback you disagree with?
  2. Describe working with colleagues from other countries or cultures.

The company has offices in many countries, so question eight is common. A good answer shows curiosity about the other person's context, not just tolerance. For question seven, describe a case where the feedback changed your behavior. Accepting feedback you agreed with proves nothing.

Mistakes and Care with Money

  1. Tell me about a mistake that affected real users.
  2. How do you make sure your code is correct when the cost of a bug is money?

Mistakes in money software are expensive, so these questions matter more at Wise. Talk about tests, reviews, monitoring, and what you changed after the mistake. Hiding or minimizing an error in your story is the one unrecoverable answer at a transparency company.

A Worked Sample Answer

Question four is the most important, because the company values autonomy most. An outline:

  • Situation: "Our team owned transfer notifications. Users complained they arrived late, but nobody was assigned to fix it."
  • Task: "I decided to own the problem for one sprint."
  • Action: "I measured the delay first and found the queue was processed once per minute. I rebuilt the consumer to process continuously and added a delay metric."
  • Result: "Median notification delay dropped from 40 seconds to under two. Complaints about notifications ended that month."

The pattern to copy: nobody asked, you measured before changing anything, and you finished with a number. Practice telling it in under two minutes. Then prepare one follow-up detail per part, because interviewers at Wise probe stories rather than collecting them.
