Nvidia software engineer levels run from IC1 to IC8. IC1 is the entry level, IC3 is the first level with Senior in the title, IC6 is Principal Engineer, and IC8 is Senior Distinguished Engineer.
Nvidia publishes none of that. There is no public level-to-title map and no public level-to-pay map, so everything below comes from Nvidia job postings, from levels.fyi, and from reports by current employees. Engineers on Blind say the level sits deep enough inside Nvidia's own systems that some of them do not know their own number.
The part that confuses candidates most is in the middle of the range. Three consecutive levels, IC3, IC4, and IC5, all carry the word Senior in the title. So the title on an Nvidia offer tells you very little, and the IC number is what sets your pay band.
Nvidia Levels in One Table
| Level | Reported Title | Years of Experience | Google / Meta Equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| IC1 | Software Engineer (entry) | 0 to 2 | L3 / E3 |
| IC2 | Software Engineer II | 2 to 5 | L4 / E4 |
| IC3 | Senior Software Engineer | 5 to 8 | L5 / E5 |
| IC4 | Senior Software Engineer II | 7 to 9 | L5 to L6 / E5 to E6 |
| IC5 | Senior Software Engineer III | 9 to 11 | L6 / E6 |
| IC6 | Principal Engineer | 11 to 15 | L7 / E7 |
| IC7 | Distinguished Engineer | 15 to 20 | L8 / E8 |
| IC8 | Senior Distinguished Engineer | 20+ | L9 / E9 |
That mapping is softer than the same table for Google or Amazon, because Nvidia confirms none of it. The level codes and the Principal, Distinguished, and Senior Distinguished titles come from levels.fyi, while the years of experience and the Senior titles come from employee reports. The Google and Meta equivalents are derived from reported pay and scope.
Why an Nvidia Title Does Not Tell You the Level
Most large companies change the title when the level changes. Nvidia does not, at least not inside the Senior band. Employees describe IC3, IC4, and IC5 as Senior Software Engineer, Senior Software Engineer II, and Senior Software Engineer III, and one of them said the company calls almost everyone senior.
Staff and Senior Staff are used in some organizations and not in others. Two engineers with the same title can therefore sit two levels and more than $100K apart. Ask which IC number an offer is, not which title.
Nvidia job postings do name a level, and that is the most useful public signal. Postings in states with pay transparency laws quote a base salary range against a numbered level, and many quote two of them, which means one requisition can be filled at either level.
One Senior Staff Software Engineer posting asking for eight or more years of experience quoted a base range of 168,000 to 264,500 for Level 4, and 200,000 to 322,000 for Level 5. Those bands track the IC levels reported to levels.fyi, so the level named in a posting is worth reading.
IC1: Software Engineer
IC1 is Nvidia's entry level, for new graduates and engineers with up to about two years of experience. An IC1 works on defined tasks with review from a more senior engineer, often on a driver, a compiler pass, or a kernel. So the first year is mostly about learning the hardware underneath.
Reported median total compensation is near $169K in the United States. Employees say fresh master's graduates usually start at IC2 instead, and fresh PhD graduates are sometimes hired at IC3. See what a fresher earns at Nvidia for more on the entry band.
IC2: Software Engineer II
IC2 is the second level, usually two to five years of experience, and the common starting point for a new master's graduate.
An IC2 owns small features end to end and needs much less review than an IC1, but the work is still scoped by somebody else. Reported median total compensation is near 225K, with about 169K of that as base salary.
IC3: Senior Software Engineer
IC3 is the first level with Senior in the title, and a large share of Nvidia engineers sit here. Reported years of experience run from five to eight, although employees say strong candidates reach it sooner.
An IC3 owns a component and delivers against a goal without close supervision. They review other engineers' code, debug problems that cross a module boundary, and take part in design work for their team's area.
Many Nvidia engineers report staying at IC3 for a long time. Blind threads describe it as a terminal level, meaning a level you can hold for a whole career without pressure to be promoted. Nvidia does not publish a terminal level, so treat that as reported practice rather than company policy.
Reported median total compensation is near 320K, with a base salary near 208K.
IC4: Senior Software Engineer II
IC4 is the next step, usually seven to nine years of experience. Some teams title it Staff Software Engineer and some keep the Senior wording.
The difference from IC3 is scope rather than coding skill. An IC3 owns a component inside a plan that somebody else set, while an IC4 sets the plan for an area and carries projects that depend on two or more teams. At Nvidia that often means work crossing the hardware boundary, from the silicon to the framework above it.
Employees report that promotion from IC3 to IC4 takes two to three years at the earliest, and that promotions across Nvidia are hard. Several advise negotiating for IC4 at the offer stage instead. Reported median total compensation is near $389K.
IC5: Senior Software Engineer III
IC5 is the top of the Senior band, usually with nine to eleven years of experience. The title varies more here than anywhere else: asked what they are called, Nvidia IC5 engineers named Senior Software Engineer, Senior Software Engineer III, Staff, Senior Staff, and Tech Lead.
An IC5 owns a large area of a product and sets technical direction inside it. They are the person other teams consult before building anything against that area.
Reported total compensation is near 452K, inside a range of about 335K to $500K. One Nvidia engineer wrote that both their responsibility and their pay at IC5 exceeded what they held as an L5 at Google.
Because one requisition often covers two levels, the Nvidia interview loop decides which of them you are offered. Working through complete system design problems is the highest value preparation for an IC4 or IC5 loop.
IC6: Principal Engineer
IC6 is Principal Engineer, the first level whose title is both distinctive and used consistently, with reported experience of eleven to fifteen years.
A Principal Engineer sets technical direction across several teams, or for a whole area of Nvidia software such as a compiler stack or an inference runtime. They also resolve the hardest technical disagreements inside that area.
Reported median total compensation is near 644K, with a base near 351K and annual stock near 290K. The step from IC5 to IC6 adds close to 200K, the largest increase anywhere below the Distinguished titles.
IC7 and IC8: Distinguished and Senior Distinguished Engineer
IC7 is Distinguished Engineer and IC8 is Senior Distinguished Engineer. Both are rare, and Nvidia does use the Distinguished Engineer title in its own job postings.
A Distinguished Engineer has influence across the company and is usually known outside it for work in their field, with fifteen to twenty years of experience reported. Employees describe IC8 as far rarer still, with one estimating that only one or two people hold it.
Reported median total compensation for IC7 is above $1M. The IC8 figure on levels.fyi is lower than its IC6 figure, which indicates too few submissions rather than a real decrease, so treat both as unreliable. Some aggregator sites describe an IC9 Fellow level above IC8, but levels.fyi does not list one, so Fellow is best treated as unconfirmed.
How Nvidia Pay Works
Nvidia calls its stock grants NSUs, short for Nvidia Stock Unit. An NSU is the same instrument as a restricted stock unit elsewhere, which is a promise of shares that become yours on a schedule. Reports agree that NSUs vest quarterly with no one year cliff. A cliff is a date before which nothing vests at all, so quarterly vesting from the start suits anyone who may leave early.
Reports differ on the shape after that. Some describe an even four year grant at 6.25 percent per quarter, and others a front loaded grant paying 40 percent in the first year. Ask for the year by year breakdown in writing, because the two are worth very different amounts.
| Level | Median Total Compensation (US) |
|---|---|
| IC1 | about $169K |
| IC2 | about $225K |
| IC3 | about $320K |
| IC4 | about $389K |
| IC5 | about 420K to 452K |
| IC6 | about $644K |
| IC7 | above $1M, very few submissions |
| IC8 | too few submissions to report |
Those are levels.fyi figures read at the time of writing. Nvidia pay moves with the share price more than most, so check levels.fyi for current numbers before you negotiate. Nvidia does negotiate salary, and the level is the part worth settling first.
Low turnover makes promotion slower. Nvidia reports voluntary turnover under 4 percent in its sustainability report, far below the semiconductor industry average, so senior positions open slowly.
How Nvidia Levels Compare to Google, Meta, and Amazon
Nvidia IC numbers run lower than Google L numbers for the same work, which is the opposite of Amazon.
| Career Stage | Nvidia | Meta | Amazon | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | IC1 | L3 | E3 | L4 (SDE I) |
| Mid | IC2 | L4 | E4 | L5 (SDE II) |
| Senior | IC3 | L5 | E5 | L6 (SDE III) |
| Staff | IC4 to IC5 | L6 | E6 | L7 (Principal) |
| Senior Staff | IC6 | L7 | E7 | L7 to L8 |
| Distinguished | IC7 | L8 to L9 | E8 to E9 | L10 |
An Nvidia IC3 matches a Google L5 and an Amazon L6. The number is two lower than Google's and three lower than Amazon's for the same job, so comparing level numbers across these companies does not work.
Note where the Principal title appears. Nvidia reaches Principal Engineer at IC6, which is the stage Google calls Senior Staff, so an Nvidia Principal is not doing the job of a Google Principal at L8. Pay compares better than the numbers do: an Nvidia IC6 near $644K sits close to a Google L7.

Frequently asked questions
What is IC4 at Nvidia? IC4 is the level above Senior Software Engineer, usually with seven to nine years of experience. Some teams title it Staff Software Engineer and others Senior Software Engineer II. An IC4 sets the plan for an area and leads work across more than one team, for a reported median total compensation near $389K.
What is IC5 at Nvidia? IC5 is the top of Nvidia's Senior band, usually with nine to eleven years of experience. Reported titles include Senior Software Engineer III, Staff, and Senior Staff, all for the same level. Reported total compensation is near $452K.
What is the difference between IC3 and IC4 at Nvidia? Scope, not coding skill. An IC3 owns a component inside a plan somebody else set, while an IC4 sets the plan for an area and carries work across team boundaries. Both can be titled Senior, so the IC number is the only reliable difference, and reported pay is about $70K apart.
How many years of experience do you need for Nvidia IC4? Usually seven to nine, based on employee reports. Nvidia publishes no requirement, and people do arrive earlier with strong systems or GPU experience. Promotion from IC3 takes two to three years at the earliest, so negotiating IC4 at the offer is faster than waiting for it.
Does Nvidia use Staff and Senior Staff titles? Inconsistently. Both appear in some Nvidia job postings and some organizations, while other teams put IC3 through IC5 all under Senior. Employees report that nobody at Nvidia refers to each other by title, so recruiters compare the IC number instead.
What is the terminal level at Nvidia? Nvidia does not publish one. A terminal level is a level you can hold for a whole career without pressure to be promoted. Employees on Blind describe IC3, the first Senior level, as working that way in practice, and say most people hired as senior stay senior.
Is Nvidia IC5 the same as Google L5? No, and the gap is large. Nvidia IC5 is the top of its Senior band and compares to a Google L6, while Google L5 compares to Nvidia IC3. Subtracting two from the Google number gets you close to the Nvidia one.
