Oracle software engineering levels run from IC1 at entry level to IC6, the Architect level. IC3 and IC4 hold most of the engineers, and nearly every Oracle offer names one of those two.
The confusing part is that Oracle gives one job three names: a career level such as IC3, a Member of Technical Staff title such as Senior MTS, and a job code title such as Software Developer 3. One Oracle posting for a Bengaluru team prints all three on a single line: "Software Developer 2, IC2, Member of Technical Staff".
The number is the pay band, meaning the salary range Oracle will pay at that level. The title is whatever the hiring organization calls it.
This guide maps every IC number to its titles, gives the experience Oracle asks for at each one, and compares them to Google, Meta and Amazon levels.
Oracle Levels in One Table
| Career Level | MTS Title | Other Posted Titles | Typical Years | Google / Meta |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IC1 | none | Software Developer 1 | 0 to 2 | L3 / E3 |
| IC2 | Member of Technical Staff (MTS) | Software Developer 2 | 2 to 4 | L3 to L4 / E3 to E4 |
| IC3 | Senior MTS | Software Developer 3, Senior Software Engineer | 4 to 8 | L4 to L5 / E4 to E5 |
| IC4 | Principal MTS | Software Developer 4, Principal Software Engineer | 5 to 12 | L5 / E5 |
| IC5 | Consulting MTS | Software Developer 5 | 10+ | L6 / E6 |
| IC6 | Architect | Software Architect | rare | L7 or above / E7 |
Oracle does not publish a level matrix the way Google and Meta do. The titles and years come from current postings on Oracle's careers site, and the last column from reported offers, so treat that column as approximate.
How the IC Numbers and the Titles Fit Together
Oracle runs one career level system for the whole company, with two tracks. The IC track covers individual contributors, meaning employees who do not manage people, and is reported to run from IC0 to IC6. The M track covers managers and runs from M1 to M10. The two are not matched, so M3 is not a step above IC3.
Engineering titles sit on top of that number, in three families. The Member of Technical Staff family is the one Oracle is known for, and the table above gives it.
The Software Developer family numbers the title to match the band, so Software Developer 3 is IC3 and Software Developer 4 is IC4. Oracle's internal job code states it outright, because the Bengaluru posting carries the code 10520.Software Developer 2.PRODEV.SWENG.IC2.
The plain engineer family belongs mostly to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, whose postings read "Senior Software Engineer (IC3)" or "Principal Software Engineer (IC4)".
Read the number, not the word. Principal means IC4 in product development, but other Oracle organizations attach Principal and Senior Principal to different bands. If a recruiter gives you a title alone, ask which IC level the job is posted at.
IC1: Software Developer 1
IC1 is Oracle's entry level, used for new graduates and engineers in their first year or two. A posting at this band describes contributing to design, development, testing and maintenance alongside experienced engineers, so the work is assigned, reviewed and guided.
There is no MTS title at IC1. Postings read Software Developer 1 or Entry-Level Software Engineer.
IC2: Member of Technical Staff
IC2 is where the MTS title begins, and Oracle describes these postings as early career roles for engineers with some professional experience.
An MTS delivers features inside a service that somebody else designed, writing code, fixing defects, joining design discussions, and taking a share of their team's operational work.
The step to IC3 is scope rather than coding skill. An IC2 is given the work, and an IC3 is given the problem.
IC3: Senior Member of Technical Staff
IC3 is the level most Oracle engineers hold, and it is the band most external hires are offered.
A Senior MTS owns features from design through operation, writes the design document, leads code reviews in their area, and mentors engineers at IC2. Oracle describes the band as a person fully competent in their own area who often takes a project lead role.
Postings at IC3 ask for anywhere between three and eight years of experience, and five is the most common number. Engineers with six or seven years regularly report being placed here rather than at IC4. The Oracle interview process round by round describes the loop that sets the band.
Oracle does not publish a terminal level, meaning a level you can stay at for a whole career without pressure to be promoted. Oracle engineers on public forums describe IC3 that way, especially in the older product divisions.
IC4: Principal Member of Technical Staff
IC4 is the first level where your work has to matter outside your own team.
Oracle describes the band as non-routine and very complex work by a leading contributor who provides direction and mentoring to others. A Principal MTS owns an architecture rather than a single service, and leads work that several teams depend on.
The experience Oracle asks for at IC4 varies widely, from five years for cloud-native platform work to nine or ten years for database and healthcare roles. That spread tells you something real: IC4 is set by the scope of what you have led rather than by a count of years. Candidate reports put the promotion from IC3 at two to four years of work at wider scope, decided in an annual cycle.
An IC4 loop tests architecture more than algorithm puzzles, and the Oracle system design interview questions show the problems it uses. Working complete system design problems is the highest value preparation for that round.
IC5: Consulting Member of Technical Staff
IC5 is Consulting MTS, a senior individual contributor band that is much rarer than IC4.
Oracle posts IC5 roles for large language model infrastructure, agent platforms, AI networking, and support for its largest customers. Each covers a technical program that crosses organizations and runs for years.
Most IC5 postings ask for ten or more years of experience, and many Consulting MTS engineers held a principal or staff title elsewhere first.
IC6: Architect, and the Levels Above It
IC6 is the Architect level, the top of the IC track as Oracle's system is usually described. Oracle posts these roles, with titles such as "Architect, Cloud OS (IC6)", but very few of them. An Architect sets technical direction for a large part of a product line.
Above IC6, levels.fyi records an IC7 titled Distinguished Engineer, which Oracle employees describe inside Oracle Cloud Infrastructure as carrying a vice president title.
How Oracle Pay Works
Oracle prints a base salary range in its United States postings, and the ranges are very wide. One Principal Software Engineer posting at IC4 gives 114,600 to 234,600 per annum, and Oracle's note says it keeps broad ranges to allow for skills, experience, location and internal peer equity. Two engineers at one band can therefore be $100K apart in base salary.
Oracle lets you choose the form of your equity. Its proxy statement says every employee who receives an annual equity award chooses between all stock options, all restricted stock units, or half of each. Restricted stock units are company shares that become yours on a schedule, so they hold value even when the share price does not rise, while options pay only above the grant price.
Total pay by band, as reported to levels.fyi for the United States, runs near 167K at IC1, 175K at IC2, 215K at IC3, 301K at IC4 and 405K at IC5. The few IC6 reports pass 1M.
For Oracle India the same site reports totals near 22.6 LPA at IC1, 42.7 LPA at IC3 and 71 LPA at IC4, where LPA means lakhs per annum and one lakh is 100,000 rupees. Check levels.fyi for current numbers before an offer conversation.
How Oracle Levels Compare to Google, Meta, and Amazon
| Career Stage | Oracle | Meta | Amazon | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | IC1 | L3 | E3 | L4 (SDE I) |
| Mid | IC2 to IC3 | L4 | E4 | L5 (SDE II) |
| Senior | IC3 to IC4 | L5 | E5 | L6 (SDE III) |
| Staff or Principal | IC5 | L6 | E6 | L7 (Principal) |
| Senior Principal | IC6 | L7 or above | E7 | L8 |
The senior row covers two Oracle bands, because the Senior MTS title sits at IC3 while the senior level at Google and Meta is a step higher in scope. Engineers who have moved between these companies report Oracle IC4 as anything from Google L4 to L6, so the mapping is loose.
Pay does not follow it either, because Oracle's medians at a given scope are lower, mostly from smaller equity grants. Compare total compensation rather than level names. The FAANG software engineer levels guide has the full five-company comparison.
Frequently asked questions
What is IC3 at Oracle? IC3 is Oracle's Senior Member of Technical Staff band, also posted as Software Developer 3 or Senior Software Engineer. An IC3 owns features end to end, writes the design document, and mentors IC2 engineers. Postings usually ask for about five years of experience, and levels.fyi reports total pay near $215K in the United States.
What is IC4 at Oracle? IC4 is Principal Member of Technical Staff, the band where your work has to affect more than one team. Postings ask for between five and ten years of experience, depending on the organization, and levels.fyi reports total pay near $301K.
What is the difference between MTS, Senior MTS and Principal MTS? They are the titles for IC2, IC3 and IC4. An MTS delivers assigned work, a Senior MTS owns a problem and its design, and a Principal MTS owns an architecture several teams build against.
Is SMTS higher than Senior Software Engineer at Oracle? No, both titles are IC3. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure posts the plain engineer title, and the older product organizations use the MTS title.
Does Oracle have a terminal level? Oracle does not publish one. Engineers on public forums describe IC3 as a band they held for many years with no promotion pressure, so treat IC4 as the level that takes deliberate effort.
What does M3 mean at Oracle? M3 is a manager band rather than an engineering band, because Oracle uses M1 to M10 for people managers and IC0 to IC6 for individual contributors. A posting titled "Data Center Senior Critical Facilities Manager (M3)" is on the manager track, and the Oracle behavioral interview questions differ between the tracks.
