Behavioral round
The Okta interview for software engineers has about five stages. They are a recruiter screen, an online coding assessment, a hiring manager call, a technical loop, and a behavioral round. Most candidates finish in three to six weeks. Some candidates report about 25 days from application to a decision.
Okta builds identity software. Identity software decides who a user is and what that user is allowed to open. Because of that product, security topics appear inside normal coding and design rounds.
This guide covers each stage, what the interviewer grades, the reported timeline, and how to prepare.
The Interview Process
Okta publishes the steps for its intern program only. For technical interns it lists a CodeSignal pre-screen, a recruiter screen, a technical interview, and a hiring manager interview.
Okta does not publish the same list for full time engineering roles. The stages below come from candidate reports. The mix inside the loop changes with the level and with the team.
| Stage | Format | What is evaluated |
|---|---|---|
| Recruiter screen | 30 minute call | Background, motivation, level, logistics |
| Online coding assessment | 70 to 90 minutes, timed, often CodeSignal | Correct code and speed on easy to medium problems |
| Hiring manager call | 45 to 60 minute conversation | Project depth, decisions, fit with the team |
| Technical loop | Up to three interviews of about 60 minutes each | Live coding, system design, identity basics |
| Behavioral round | 45 to 60 minutes | Collaboration, ownership, customer trust |
Junior candidates often skip the system design interview. Senior and staff candidates report a deeper architecture round instead.
The Recruiter Screen
A recruiter speaks with you for about 30 minutes. The call is not technical. They ask about your background, your current work, and why you applied to Okta.
The recruiter is checking two things. Your experience has to match the level in the job post. Your reason for applying has to be specific.
Prepare a professional summary of about 60 seconds. Then prepare one true reason for this company. "I have built a login service and I want to work on identity full time" is specific. "Okta is a great company" is not.
The Online Coding Assessment
Most candidates report a timed coding test, often on CodeSignal. CodeSignal is an outside testing platform. Most reports give a limit of 70 to 90 minutes.
The problems are easy to medium in difficulty. Candidates report arrays, strings, hash maps, binary search, and graph traversal. One reported problem is finding the smallest value in a rotated sorted array in logarithmic time.
Some candidates report a practical task instead of puzzle style problems. One report describes building a simple bot detection script in Node. Bot detection means spotting automated traffic inside a request log.
This stage grades correctness and speed together. Write a working answer first, then improve it if time remains. For a topic list, read what Okta coding interview questions are asked and which Okta interview questions to prepare on LeetCode.
Pattern practice is the fastest way to raise your score here. Grokking the Coding Interview groups these problems by the pattern that solves them.
The Hiring Manager Call
This is a 45 to 60 minute conversation with the manager of the team. Some candidates report it before the assessment, and some report it after.
The manager asks about your projects in detail. What did you build? What did you decide, and why? What broke, and what did you do next?
The round also includes light technical talk. Expect questions about your stack, your testing habits, and how you work with other teams.
Answer with one project you know deeply. Give real numbers: users, requests per second, latency, data size. Interviewers give more credit to candidates who owned an outcome, not a list of tickets.
The Technical Loop
The loop contains up to three interviews of about 60 minutes each. One or two are live coding. Senior candidates also get a design interview.
Some candidates report that the live coding session reviews their assessment answer. The interviewer reads your code, asks why you chose that approach, and asks you to improve it. Practice explaining your own solution out loud.
Identity and security topics appear inside these rounds. Know single sign-on, which is one login that opens many applications. Know multi-factor authentication, which is a second proof of identity such as a code sent to a phone. Know OAuth, which is a standard that lets an application act for a user without holding that user's password.
You do not need to be an Okta product expert. You do need plain definitions and one sentence on when each is used. For a full problem list by topic, read which Okta coding interview questions to prepare.
The System Design Round
The design interview runs about 60 minutes on a shared whiteboard or document. It appears mostly for mid level and senior candidates.
The questions have an identity theme. Reported examples include cross-domain single sign-on, a distributed rate limiter, and a real-time monitoring service. A rate limiter is a service that caps how many requests one caller may send.
Four signals decide the score. Structure the problem before you draw. Estimate users and requests per second.
The last two signals are depth and security. Explain one part in detail. Show security awareness, which means token expiry, encryption, and least privilege access.
A workable split of the hour is ten minutes on requirements and twenty on the high level design. Then spend twenty minutes on one deep dive and ten on trade-offs. Read what to expect in the Okta system design interview before you practice.
The Behavioral Round
Behavioral questions appear twice. The hiring manager asks some, and a separate round of 45 to 60 minutes asks more. For senior roles that round may be with a director.
Okta interviewers listen for three things: collaboration, ownership, and customer trust. Customer trust is the most important of the three. An identity outage can lock every employee of a customer out of every application.
Answer in the STAR format. STAR means Situation, Task, Action, Result. Keep each story under three minutes and end with a number.
Expect a question about a disagreement with a teammate. Expect another about a mistake that affected users. Admit the mistake plainly, then say what you changed so it could not repeat. The full question set is in top Okta behavioral interview questions.
The motivation question comes in two shapes. Some interviewers ask why do you want to work at Okta, and some ask why do you want to join Okta. Prepare one answer that names the product area you want and one problem you want to solve there.
After the Interview
Candidates report hearing back within one to two weeks per round. The wait after the final loop is longer. Reports give two to three weeks for that step.
Rejections usually arrive as an automated email with no detail. Some candidates report nearly three weeks of silence before that email. Some report no message at all. Okta does not give written feedback, though a recruiter may share a general comment if you ask once and politely.
Follow up with the recruiter who scheduled you. Wait one full week after a round before writing. Wait five business days if you were given a date that has already passed.
Send one email per week at most. Two messages in three days make a poor impression.
For the stage by stage view with reported lengths, read what the Okta interview process is like, round by round.
How to Prepare
Practice medium coding problems under a timer. The assessment grades speed as well as correctness. Solve problems in 25 minute blocks so the time limit does not surprise you.
Learn the coding patterns, not single problems. Sliding window, two pointers, binary search, and graph traversal cover most reported questions. One pattern solves many problems, so you prepare for more questions in less time.
Learn three identity terms well. Single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, and OAuth are enough for most rounds. Be able to define each in one plain sentence.
Prepare six STAR stories. Cover conflict, ownership, an unclear specification, a mistake with users, a risk you raised, and your reason for joining. Each one should end with a measurable result.
Practice one design question per week. Draw it, estimate the load, and then add security. Grokking the System Design Interview walks through the same structure interviewers grade.
Ask your recruiter what your loop contains. The mix changes by level and team. A short email removes the guessing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many rounds does Okta have? Candidates report about five stages. They are a recruiter screen, an online coding assessment, a hiring manager call, a technical loop, and a behavioral round. The loop itself contains up to three interviews. Your exact list depends on the level and the team.
How long does the Okta interview take? Most candidates finish in three to six weeks. Some candidates report about 25 days from application to a decision. The wait after the final loop is the longest part.
Does Okta use CodeSignal? Okta names a CodeSignal pre-screen for technical interns on its own intern program page. Many full time candidates report the same assessment as the first technical stage. Some report a live coding session with an engineer instead, so ask your recruiter which one applies to you.
How hard is the Okta interview? Candidate difficulty ratings are near the middle of the scale. Coding problems are easy to medium rather than hard. Most reported rejections come from slow coding or thin project stories.
Does Okta ask about identity and security? Yes, in the technical and design rounds. You are not expected to know the Okta product in depth. You are expected to define single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, and OAuth without hesitating.
Is there a system design interview for junior roles? Usually not. The design round is reported mostly for mid level, senior, and staff candidates. Junior loops focus on coding and behavioral questions.
