A proxy sees every request that passes through it, and it can change what it forwards. That single position is why proxies get used for so many different jobs.
There are ten common ones. They fall into three groups: making things faster, making them safer, and giving you control over what happens.
Making Things Faster
1. Performance enhancement. A proxy can cache frequently accessed content, which removes the need to keep asking the target server for the same thing. That improves response times, reduces bandwidth usage, and lowers the load on the target servers.
2. Load balancing. A reverse proxy can distribute client requests across multiple target servers, so no single server becomes overburdened. This keeps availability and performance up, and it matters most for large applications with many concurrent users.
3. Content adaptation and transformation. A proxy can modify content to suit the client asking for it. That includes altering image formats, compressing data, or adjusting content for a mobile or low bandwidth device. The user gets something shaped for their device and connection instead of the full desktop version.
Making Things Safer
4. Security enhancement. A proxy acts as a protective barrier between clients and target servers. It enforces access control policies and filters malicious or harmful content. By monitoring and filtering traffic, it helps protect internal networks from external threats and blocks unauthorized access to sensitive resources.
5. Anonymity and privacy. A proxy can mask the client's IP address and other identifying information, which gives a level of anonymity when accessing the internet. This is what people use when they want content that is restricted by geographic location, or when they want to avoid being tracked.
6. SSL termination. A reverse proxy can handle the SSL/TLS encryption and decryption itself, taking that work off the target servers. Encryption and decryption are computationally expensive, so removing that overhead improves the performance of the servers behind it. This is called SSL termination.
Keeping Control
7. Centralized control and monitoring. All traffic runs through one place, so administrators can apply policies, filters, and other configuration in a single location rather than on every machine.
8. Content filtering and access control. A proxy can be configured to block or filter specific content types, websites, or services according to set policies. Schools and companies use this to enforce acceptable use policies or to meet regulatory requirements.
9. Logging and auditing. A proxy can log and record the traffic passing through it. Those logs are what you go to for auditing, troubleshooting, and monitoring, and they are how administrators find performance issues, security holes, or policy violations.
10. Application-level gateway. A proxy can process and forward application specific requests and responses between clients and servers. Working at the application level lets it add functionality such as authentication, content filtering, or translating between protocols.
Filtering and Adaptation Are Not the Same
These two are easy to confuse because both involve the proxy interfering with content.
Filtering blocks or restricts what you can reach. The request for a blocked site does not go through.
Adaptation reshapes what you receive. The request goes through fine, but the response comes back compressed, or as a smaller image, or reformatted for a phone.
One decides whether you get the content. The other decides what form it arrives in.
💡 When a proxy comes up in a design question, say which kind you mean and what job it is doing. "A reverse proxy in front of the service tier doing SSL termination and load balancing" tells the interviewer where the box sits and what it is for. "I would add a proxy" does not.
Key takeaway: Proxies are used to cache content, balance load, and adapt content for the device; to filter malicious traffic, mask client IP addresses, and terminate SSL so backends do not pay the encryption cost; and to centralize control, filter content, keep logs for auditing, and act as an application level gateway. Filtering controls what you can reach, adaptation controls what form it arrives in.
