How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Commonwealth Bank?"
The strongest answer names one CommBank product, connects it to the bank's three values, and proves the connection with your own work. Commonwealth Bank uses the name CommBank in public, and candidates search for both names. It is one of Australia's largest banks, and it builds most of its technology itself.
CommBank states its purpose as "Building a brighter future for all" and names three values: Care, Courage, and Commitment. Interviewers call these the three C's, and candidates report being asked how the three C's apply to them.
Candidates report that "Why do you want to work at CommBank?" is one of the most common questions in its interviews. Graduate applicants also report a written question in the application form, asking which area of the program interests them and why.
What the Interviewer Listens For
Point 1: real product knowledge. The CommBank app is the bank's main product for customers, and millions of people use it. The bank has also added safety features that are easy to name in an answer.
NameCheck tells a customer whether the account name and the account details they typed appear to match. CallerCheck triggers a message in the CommBank app, so a customer can check a caller who claims to be from the bank. Naming one feature like this proves that you did research.
Point 2: the three values, with evidence. Care means serving customers and colleagues with humility, Courage means stepping in and speaking up, and Commitment means doing what is right. Pick one value and attach a real story to it. Courage suits engineers well: describe a time you raised a risk that others preferred to ignore.
Point 3: comfort with regulated work. A bank moves money, and it must prove afterwards what it did. Interviewers listen for candidates who accept review, audit, and privacy rules as part of the job. A story where you chose a slower and safer release is stronger here than a story about releasing quickly.
Point 4: interest in the platform work. CommBank moved its core banking platform onto AWS, and the published AWS case study reports that about 40 percent of Australia's payments depend on that platform. Its engineering careers page states that it is a strategic partner of OpenAI, the first Australian bank to be one. Name which of these problems you want to work on, and say why that one.
A Three Part Structure
Part 1: The product link (2 to 3 sentences). Name one CommBank product or feature, and say why it interests you as an engineer.
Part 2: Your proof (2 to 3 sentences). Describe one thing you built that relates to it, and include a number.
Part 3: The direction (1 to 2 sentences). Say what you want to build at CommBank, and in which part of the bank.
Sample Answer
"I want to work at CommBank because payments is the part of banking where correctness matters most, and I have worked on it. At my current company I own the job that matches our card payments against the settlement file each night. When I started on it, about 400 payments a day failed to match and were corrected by hand. I rebuilt the matching rules and added an alert for unmatched batches, and the daily figure is now under ten. That work taught me why audit records and clear ownership matter more than clever code. CommBank handles a large share of Australia's payments, and a feature like NameCheck shows that it treats payment safety as a product, not only as a control. I want to work on systems like that, where a small gain in accuracy protects real customers."
The answer works because every claim has proof behind it: the product interest comes with a reason, and the ownership claim comes with two numbers. The direction is also specific enough to assign to a team.
Where the Question Appears
The motivation question appears first in the screening call, and interviewers ask it again in a different form later in the process. Graduate candidates answer it in writing in the application, again in the recorded digital interview, and again at the assessment center. Keep the same core answer every time, because interviewers compare their notes afterwards. Add one new detail in the later rounds, such as a feature you tried in the app, because consistency is itself a signal of honesty.
Common Mistakes
- Praising the brand. Calling the bank large and stable describes every major bank, so the answer must name something only CommBank does.
- Ignoring the values. The three C's appear in reported interview questions, so an answer that mentions none of them scores lower than it should.
- Listing the wrong values. Older sources name a longer list of values, so use the three that the careers site states now: Care, Courage, and Commitment.
- Treating the question as a test of enthusiasm. Interviewers want evidence rather than adjectives, so every claim needs a project or a number behind it.
- Skipping the business area. CommBank asks which area interests you, so name one team or one product and then explain that choice.
How to Prepare
- Learn the stages first. The Commonwealth Bank interview process shows which rounds ask this question.
- Prepare the technical story too. The Commonwealth Bank system design interview covers the payment and fraud systems you can name in this answer.
- Know the waiting times. How long it takes to hear back explains what happens after you answer well.
- Practice the structure. Grokking Modern Behavioral Interview teaches evidence first answers for the whole behavioral set.
