How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Nubank?"

"Why do you want to work at Nubank?" is a question about mission fit and engineering taste. Nubank is a digital bank from Brazil that also serves Mexico and Colombia. Its stated mission is to fight complexity and give people control of their money. A good answer does three things. It connects your own experience to that mission. It shows contact with the product or with Nubank's engineering culture. And it names what you want to build there. Generic fintech praise fails, because interviewers hear it daily.

Nubank's engineering culture is unusually public. The company is one of the best known users of Clojure, a functional programming language. Functional programming is a style that avoids changing data in place and builds programs from small, predictable functions. Nubank also builds on Kafka, a system that moves streams of events between services. Mentioning this stack, with honesty about your own experience, signals real research.

What the Interviewer Listens For

  • Mission connection. Banking in Latin America was expensive and slow for decades. A candidate who explains why that problem matters to them personally is memorable.
  • Engineering culture fit. Candidates report that interviewers value a functional programming mindset even in other languages. Curiosity about this style counts in your favor.
  • Ownership. Nubank behavioral rounds ask for concrete ownership and accountability. Your motivation should point at work you carried yourself.
  • Challenge to the status quo. The company describes itself as a challenger to traditional banks. It wants people who question defaults in their own work too.

A Three-Part Structure

Part 1: The reason (2 to 3 sentences). Name the mission or the engineering culture, with one specific detail. Product experience or a Nubank engineering blog post both work.

Part 2: Your evidence (3 to 4 sentences). Describe one system you owned, with numbers. Connect it to money software, event-driven systems, or functional programming if you can.

Part 3: The direction (1 to 2 sentences). Say what problem at Nubank you want to work on, such as payments, credit, or fraud.

Sample Answer

"I want to work at Nubank because it proved that a bank can be software first, and I watched that change happen. My family in Brazil paid monthly fees for a basic account for years, and Nubank ended that for them. In my current job I own an event-driven billing service that processes about 500,000 events a day through Kafka. Building it taught me idempotency, exact ledgers, and why immutable data makes money systems safer. Nubank's public writing on Clojure and immutable data matches how I have come to think. I want to bring that experience to a team where correctness protects real customers, ideally in payments or credit."

Six sentences, one number, one personal reason, one technical match, one direction.

Adjust the sample to your own facts. If you have no personal link to Latin America, use the product angle instead. Download the app if you can, or study Nubank's public engineering posts. One specific observation is enough. Keep the spoken version under ninety seconds and save details for follow-up questions.

Common Mistakes

  • Generic fintech praise. "Nubank is a leading digital bank" could open any answer about any company. It proves nothing.
  • Faking the stack. Do not claim Clojure experience you lack. Honest curiosity, backed by a small experiment, reads far better.
  • Mission words without evidence. Repeating "fight complexity" without a personal or technical connection sounds rehearsed.
  • No direction. An answer that never says what you want to build leaves the interviewer to guess. Never end on praise alone.
  • Ignoring the scale. Nubank serves customers across three countries. An answer built for a tiny startup misses the reality of the work.
