How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Synthesia?"

The best answer connects Synthesia's product to your own work. Synthesia builds an AI video platform for businesses, in which a user types a script and the platform produces a video with an AI avatar and a synthetic voice. Companies use it for training, onboarding, and internal communication. Synthesia's job postings do not show a written motivation question in the application form, so the question comes up in the recruiter call instead.

A strong answer proves three things: that you understand the product, that you have owned real work end to end, and that you want a fast, low-meeting pace.

What the Interviewer Listens For

1. Real product knowledge. Synthesia sells more than avatars, because it also sells voices, video translation and dubbing, interactive video, and roleplay sessions for practice. Its research team describes a three part model for avatars, in which one part generates gestures, one part checks that motion matches the audio, and one part renders the frames. Naming a specific part like this shows you did real research.

2. Customer focus. The first stated value is "Put the Customer First", and Synthesia's head of talent has said the interview process now tests customer empathy and product sense. Show a moment when user feedback changed what you built.

3. Ownership. The second value is "Own it & Go Direct", and Synthesia hires mostly experienced engineers and gives them whole problems. Its engineering blog describes one meeting a week and decisions made in writing, so interviewers want stories where you shipped without waiting for permission.

4. Speed with care. The third value is "Be Fast & Experimental", and engineers ship features every few days. At the same time, Synthesia states a "People first" position on AI safety: a fixed part of the team works only on safety and ethics, every script is checked before rendering, and every video is checked after. Real curiosity about that balance is worth more than general AI excitement.

A Three Part Structure

Part 1: The product (2 to 3 sentences). Say why you want to work on AI video for business, and include evidence, such as a video you made on the platform or a related system you built.

Part 2: Your proof (2 to 3 sentences). Describe one thing you built and owned end to end, and include a number.

Part 3: The direction (1 to 2 sentences). Say what you want to build at Synthesia.

Sample Answer

"I want to work at Synthesia because video is the format people actually finish, and most companies cannot afford to make it. I made a short onboarding video on the free plan and translated it into three languages in one afternoon. At my current company I built the media pipeline for user uploads. I own it end to end: transcoding, storage tiers, and delivery. It now handles about 12,000 uploads a day with no manual steps. That work taught me how expensive video processing is when it is done carelessly. Synthesia solves that problem for every customer at once, and I want to build the rendering and delivery layer that makes it cheap and fast."

This answer works because every claim has proof: the product interest comes with a real use, the ownership claim comes with a number, and the direction is specific.

Where the Question Appears

Expect the motivation question in the recruiter call first, although it often returns in the leadership call in a deeper form that asks for more evidence, not more enthusiasm. Keep the same core answer both times, because interviewers compare notes and a story that changes between rounds makes them trust you less. Consistency itself is a signal. Add one new proof point in the later round, such as a detail from the research pages or a product release.

Common Mistakes

  • Generic AI excitement. An answer that fits any AI company fails here, because Synthesia is a business video company first, and the answer must show that.
  • Wanting a lot of structure. Synthesia describes a low-process culture with few meetings, so asking for detailed specs and daily standups shows a mismatch.
  • No product contact. The platform has a free plan, so arriving without having made one video looks unserious.
  • Ignoring safety. Synthesia talks about AI safety in public and checks every video, so treating that as a slowdown, rather than part of the product, is a mistake.
  • Talking only about models. Most engineering roles work on the platform: the editor, delivery, billing, and collaboration. Show interest in the whole product.
