How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Tech Mahindra?"
A strong answer names the work Tech Mahindra actually does. Tech Mahindra is an IT services and consulting company, which means it builds and runs software for other companies rather than selling one product of its own. Its best known practice is communications, so it works on telecom operator systems, network engineering, and billing and customer platforms, while it also serves banking, manufacturing, retail, and healthcare clients.
The interviewer wants three things: real knowledge of this business, a reason tied to the work, and comfort with a client facing role.
What the Interviewer Listens For
1. You know the company is services led. Say so plainly, because a services engineer is assigned to a client account and works to that client's stack and schedule. A candidate who describes Tech Mahindra as a product company has not researched it.
2. You know the communications strength. Tech Mahindra started as a joint venture with a telecom operator, and communications is still the practice it is best known for. Naming that history, or naming network and 5G engineering work, shows research that most candidates skip.
3. You connect to the stated purpose. Tech Mahindra states its promise to clients as Scale at Speed, and its own site lists five values: Professionalism, Good Corporate Citizenship, Customer First, Quality Focus, and Dignity of the Individual. The site also states the Mahindra group Rise philosophy as three pillars: Rise for a more equal world, Rise to be future ready, and Rise to create value. Tie one of these to a story of your own rather than quoting it alone.
4. You are ready for the practical terms. Client work means relocation, shifts on some accounts, and training on whatever the account uses, so saying yes clearly, and meaning it, is part of the answer.
A Three Part Structure
Part 1: The company reason (two to three sentences). Name the business and one specific practice that interests you.
Part 2: Your proof (two to three sentences). Describe one thing you built or fixed, with a number in the result.
Part 3: The direction (one to two sentences). Say what you want to learn or build in the first year here.
Sample Answer
"I want to join Tech Mahindra because I want to work on systems that real operators depend on every day. The communications practice interests me most, since telecom work involves scale, reliability, and constant change. In my final year I built a Java service that processed our college's fee records and replaced a manual spreadsheet process. It cut the reporting work from about six hours a week to under one. That project taught me that most of the value comes from understanding the client's process, not from the framework I choose. Tech Mahindra names Customer First as one of its values, and that is the habit I want to build early in my career. In my first year I want to become dependable on one account, learn its domain properly, and then take ownership of a module."
This answer works because every claim has evidence: the interest is specific, the proof has a number, and the first year plan fits a services role.
Where the Question Appears
Expect the question in the HR round, where it is almost guaranteed, although it also appears at the start of the technical interview, in the shorter form of "tell me about yourself and why this company". Some candidates also report general essay topics in the written test, so clear written reasoning helps there as well.
Keep one core answer and use it in every round, because interviewers compare notes and a candidate who gives two different reasons is harder to believe.
Common Mistakes
- Treating the job as a temporary step. Saying that you will move to a product company later, even indirectly, fails the round, so if that is your plan, do not state it here.
- Only praising the size or the brand. Calling the company big or reputed says nothing about you. Name work instead.
- Refusing the practical terms. Candidates who rule out relocation, shifts, or the assigned technology are marked as hard to place.
- Talking only about training. Free training is a benefit, not a reason, and interviewers hear it constantly.
- Confusing programs. The standard drive and the Supercoders challenge are different routes with different tests, as the assessment test pattern explains, so naming the wrong one shows careless research.
How to Prepare
- Read the company site for one hour. Its own pages name the services, the domains, and the stated values you can quote.
- Match your answer to the loop. The rounds are listed in the Tech Mahindra interview process, so you know where the question appears.
- Prepare one story per theme. Ownership, learning quickly, and handling a difficult requirement are the themes HR asks about most.
- Practice the delivery. Grokking Modern Behavioral Interview teaches answers built on evidence rather than adjectives.
- Plan the follow up. Knowing the reply times in how long it takes to hear back keeps you calm after the round.
