TCS gives every employee a grade written as a letter and a number, and the engineering grades run from C1Y at trainee level up to SP1 and above. C1 is Systems Engineer, C2 is IT Analyst, and C3A is Assistant Consultant.
The grade matters more than the designation, because your pay band and promotion eligibility follow from the grade rather than the job title. One part of the order also reads backwards: Assistant Consultant at C3A is junior to Associate Consultant at C3B.
TCS publishes no grade matrix. No public page defines what each grade owns or pays, so everything below comes from levels.fyi, from posted offer letters, and from employee reports on Glassdoor, Fishbowl and Quora.
TCS Grades in One Table
| Grade | Common Title | Experience Reported | Median Pay in India (levels.fyi) |
|---|---|---|---|
| C1Y | Assistant System Engineer Trainee | 0 to 1 | 3.8 lakh |
| C1 | Assistant System Engineer / Systems Engineer | 0 to 4 | 6.7 lakh |
| C2 | IT Analyst | 3 to 7 | 10 lakh |
| C3A | Assistant Consultant | 7 to 11 | 18.1 lakh |
| C3B | Associate Consultant | 10 to 14 | 17.4 lakh |
| C4 | Consultant | 13+ | 11.2 lakh |
| C5 | Senior Consultant | 15+ | 19.6 lakh |
| SP1 | Principal Consultant | 18+ | 29.6 lakh |
The grade codes and titles are firm. The years and the pay are softer. levels.fyi lists exactly these eight grades with these titles attached, the strongest public confirmation of the mapping. The experience column comes from employee posts, which disagree by two or three years at every grade.
The pay column is the median total compensation levels.fyi reports for India. LPA means lakh per annum, and one lakh is one hundred thousand rupees. The figures above C3A rest on small samples and stop rising in grade order, so check levels.fyi for current numbers.
Your Starting Grade Depends on the Hiring Route
TCS hires most freshers through the National Qualifier Test, written as NQT, which is one online test covering aptitude and coding. Your score decides the offer type, and the three offer types do not start at the same grade.
Ninja is the standard route and the largest intake. Its offer letters name the designation Assistant System Engineer Trainee at grade Y, which levels.fyi records as C1Y.
Digital goes to candidates who clear a harder advanced section of the test. Digital hires report the designation Systems Engineer rather than trainee, which places them at C1 from the first day.
Prime goes to a smaller group who also clear an extra interview round. A Prime offer written up on GeeksforGeeks names the grade as C1 Systems Engineer, so Prime and Digital start at the same grade with different packages.
The route changes your starting grade by one step and your starting pay by more. levels.fyi puts the C1Y median near 3.8 lakh a year and the C1 median near 6.7 lakh. All three routes use the same rounds, described in the TCS interview process round by round.
C1Y: Assistant System Engineer Trainee
C1Y is the trainee grade, and it exists for the first year only. A trainee spends the early months in the Initial Learning Program, which is TCS training on one technology stack and on delivery process. All work is assigned and reviewed by someone more senior.
After about a year and a satisfactory appraisal, the trainee is confirmed as an Assistant System Engineer at C1, a step reports describe as close to automatic.
C1: Assistant System Engineer and Systems Engineer
C1 carries two designations, Assistant System Engineer first and Systems Engineer later, and both sit in the same grade. A C1 engineer codes and tests assigned modules, fixes defects, and handles support tickets for the account the team is staffed on. An account is the client engagement a TCS team is billed to.
C1 is also where many lateral hires start. TCS frequently hires engineers with two to four years of outside experience at C1 rather than C2, the most common complaint in employee posts about TCS offers. Ask for the grade code in writing before you accept.
C2: IT Analyst
C2 is IT Analyst, the grade most TCS engineers are working toward. The scope grows from a module to a feature and its design, and a C2 reviews C1 work and speaks to the client on routine matters.
Promotion from C1 to C2 is the slowest step for most people. Employee reports describe about four years of total experience as the usual point of eligibility, three appraisal cycles with no C rating, and a manager nomination. The gap between eligibility and the promotion letter is often another six to twelve months.
C2 is also where a move to a product company becomes realistic, and those interviews are decided by coding rounds rather than delivery experience. Working through the coding patterns is the highest value preparation for that step.
C3A: Assistant Consultant
C3A is Assistant Consultant, the first grade in the band above C2, reported at seven to eleven years. An Assistant Consultant owns a workstream rather than a feature: several engineers, a delivery commitment to the client, and the design decisions inside one area.
The difference between C2 and C3A is scope, not coding skill. A C2 is answerable for a piece of a system. A C3A is answerable for a piece of the engagement, including estimates, staffing and the client relationship.
C3B: Associate Consultant
C3B is Associate Consultant, and it sits above C3A despite the way the two words sound. Reports put it around ten to fourteen years, and the move up from C3A usually takes three to four years.
An Associate Consultant owns a larger area and mixes solution design with account management, and many spend more time with the client than with code.
C4, C5 and SP1: Consultant to Principal Consultant
C4 is Consultant, C5 is Senior Consultant, and SP1 is Principal Consultant. Reports describe C4 from about thirteen years and C5 from about fifteen, and the two overlap because promotion here depends on account demand more than time served.
At C4 the unit of work is a program rather than a project, and the role is measured by the commercial result of the account. At C5 the scope is a portfolio of accounts or a practice.
levels.fyi puts the SP1 median total pay in India near 29.6 lakh a year, and employee reports describe SP2 and SP3 grades above it. TCS does not publish where the structure ends.
How TCS Pay Works
Indian offers quote CTC, which means cost to company: one yearly figure covering fixed pay, variable pay and benefits. CTC is not what reaches your bank account, and it is not the same measure levels.fyi reports.
Part of TCS pay is variable and paid every quarter. Reports in the Indian business press describe recent quarters where employees up to C2 received the full quarterly variable amount, while payouts for C3A and above moved with unit performance.
The word band is used two ways at TCS. Some allowances attach to a grade band, which employee reports group as Band 3 for C1Y to C2, Band 4 for C3A to C4, and Band 5 above that. An appraisal band is different: it is your yearly rating, where a C rating blocks promotion.
Increments are small in percentage terms, so the large increases arrive with a change of grade.
How TCS Grades Compare to Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant and Accenture
Comparing a TCS grade to a Google or Meta level is not very useful, because the work and the pay differ in kind. The useful comparison is with the other large Indian services firms.
| Career Stage | TCS | Infosys | Wipro | Cognizant | Accenture |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fresher | C1Y (ASE Trainee) | Systems Engineer Trainee | Project Engineer trainee | Programmer Analyst Trainee | Associate Software Engineer (CL12) |
| Engineer, 1 to 4 years | C1 (Systems Engineer) | Systems Engineer | Project Engineer (B1) | Programmer Analyst | Software Engineer (CL11) |
| Analyst, 3 to 7 years | C2 (IT Analyst) | Technology Analyst | Senior Project Engineer (B2) | Associate | Senior Software Engineer (CL10) |
| Lead, 7 to 11 years | C3A (Assistant Consultant) | Technology Lead | Senior Software Engineer (B3) | Senior Associate | Team Lead (CL9) |
| Consultant, 11+ years | C3B and C4 | Technology Architect | Lead (C1 band) | Manager | Manager (CL8 and above) |
This mapping is approximate. None of these five firms publishes a conversion table, titles move between units inside each one, and a recruiter will happily place you a row lower than the table suggests. Compare the money and the stated scope, not the names.
Two codes trap people. Wipro also uses C1 and C2, and a Wipro C1 is a lead with seven or more years. Accenture numbers run downward, so CL11 is an early-career engineer and CL9 is a lead.
Frequently asked questions
What is C1 grade in TCS? C1 is the entry engineering grade, carrying the designation Assistant System Engineer first and Systems Engineer later. levels.fyi puts the median total pay in India near 6.7 lakh a year, and Digital and Prime hires start here.
What is C2 grade in TCS? C2 is IT Analyst, reported at three to seven years. The scope is a feature and its design rather than a single module, and levels.fyi puts the median total pay in India near 10 lakh a year.
