Uber software engineer levels run from Level 3 to Level 8, with an Engineer Fellow title above that. Level 3 is Software Engineer I, Level 5a is Senior Software Engineer, and Level 5b is Staff Software Engineer.

The surprising part is that the number five appears twice. Uber divided its senior level into 5a and 5b, so an engineer can be promoted into a Staff title while the number stays at five. Level 6 is already Senior Staff.

That division is why comparing Uber numbers against Google or Meta numbers gives the wrong answer. Uber Level 6 is not the equivalent of Google L6, and it sits a step above it.

Uber does not publish a level matrix. The codes and titles above come from the Uber level list on levels.fyi, and the years of experience come from the minimums printed in Uber's own job postings. Read the last column as a guide to scope, not an official equivalence.

Why Uber Has a Level 5a and a Level 5b

Uber's senior level grew very large, and expectations inside it varied widely. Rather than add a new number, Uber divided level 5 into two steps.

Level 5a covers what most large companies call a senior engineer, which is delivering complex projects inside one team. Level 5b covers what they call a staff engineer, which is complex work that crosses team boundaries.

Uber later renamed its upper titles to match industry convention, which is how 5b came to carry the Staff title and Level 6 came to carry Senior Staff. One result is that engineers joining from Google were often placed at 5b, a code that looks junior next to the number they held before.

Level 3: Software Engineer I

Level 3 is the entry level, and nothing sits below it in the engineering level list. An engineer here works on tasks someone else has already defined, and learns Uber's services, deployment tools, and design review practices.

Uber postings for Software Engineer I accept a bachelor's degree plus about one year of experience, and publish a base salary range of 150,000 to 158,000 in San Francisco, Seattle, Sunnyvale, and New York. Engineers report moving to Level 4 in roughly one to two years.

Level 4: Software Engineer II

Level 4 is the mid-level engineer, usually with two to five years of experience. Uber postings for Software Engineer II ask for two or more years, and some teams ask for four.

An engineer at Level 4 owns a feature end to end: they break down work that arrives without a clear plan, write the design document, review other people's code, and support what they built in production.

The difference from Level 5a is scope rather than coding skill. A Level 4 owns part of a team's system, while a Level 5a owns a project that several engineers work on.

Level 4 is not a terminal level. A terminal level is one you can hold for a whole career with no pressure to be promoted. Engineers report that Uber expects a move to 5a within about three to five years.

Published base salary for Software Engineer II runs from 167,000 to 190,000 across the main United States offices.

Level 5a: Senior Software Engineer

Level 5a is Uber's senior engineer, and a large share of the engineering organization sits here.

An engineer at Level 5a leads a project rather than a feature. Reported scope is a project involving a few engineers, sometimes drawn from more than one team, running across one to three quarters. They choose the approach, not only the implementation.

Uber postings for Senior Software Engineer ask for six or more years of experience, and the published base range in New York is 202,000 to 224,000.

Level 5a is Uber's first terminal level, according to engineers who report their own experience. You can hold it without being managed out, which is the opposite of the expectation at Level 4. Many engineers do stay, and they describe the promotion to Staff as difficult.

Loops at 5a and above put most of the level decision on the design rounds instead of the coding rounds. Working through complete system design problems is the highest value preparation for a 5a or 5b loop.

Level 5b: Staff Software Engineer

Level 5b is Staff Software Engineer, the first level whose work is defined by crossing team boundaries. An engineer here owns a problem that no single team can finish alone, aligns several teams on one design, and answers for an outcome rather than a deliverable.

Uber postings for Staff Software Engineer ask for nine or more years of experience and list a base salary range of 232,000 to 258,000.

Engineers describe the step from 5a to 5b as the hardest common promotion at Uber, because the level is measured by influence on work that other people own.

Level 6: Senior Staff Software Engineer

Level 6 is Senior Staff Software Engineer, and Uber sometimes prints the code inside the job title, for example "Senior Staff Engineer (L6)".

An engineer at Level 6 sets technical direction for an organization rather than for a project. Uber's own postings describe owning the technical roadmap for a platform used across the company.

Those postings ask for ten to twelve or more years of experience, with a published base range of 267,000 to 297,000. A Senior Staff posting in Bangalore asked for fifteen or more years, so the requirement is not uniform across locations.

Level 7: Principal Engineer

Level 7 is Principal Engineer, and very few people hold it. A Principal sets technical strategy for a large part of Uber and settles the disagreements that whole organizations cannot resolve themselves.

One Uber posting for Principal Engineer asks for fifteen or more years of relevant experience with a record of technical leadership, and lists a base range of 302,000 to 336,000.

Level 8 and the Fellow Title

Level 8 is Distinguished Engineer. Uber's own posting for the role describes it as the top one percent of its engineering talent, and asks for a proven record at Principal level or above.

Above Level 8, the Uber level list on levels.fyi includes an Engineer Fellow title. Uber is reported to have added a ninth level, but no source confirms which title sits at that number, so treat Fellow as a title rather than a verified code.

How Uber Pay Works

Uber pay has three parts: base salary, an annual bonus, and restricted stock units, which are company shares that become yours over a vesting period of several years.

Pay transparency rules require Uber to print the base range in its postings, and base is the smaller half of the number. A Senior Staff posting reaches 297,000 of base salary, while median total compensation reported to levels.fyi at that level is about 806,000. Almost all of the difference is stock.

Uber LevelTitleMedian Total Compensation on levels.fyi
3Software Engineer Iabout $203K
4Software Engineer IIabout $278K
5aSenior Software Engineerabout $421K
5bStaff Software Engineerabout $620K
6Senior Staff Software Engineerabout $806K
7Principal Engineerabout $1.38M

Those are United States medians from self-reported offers, they move with the share price, and no figure is reported for Level 8. Check levels.fyi for current numbers before an offer conversation.

The increase from 5a to 5b is the largest single step. Reported median total compensation grows by about $200,000 per year across that one promotion.

How Uber Levels Compare to Google, Meta, and Amazon

Career StageUberGoogleMetaAmazon
Entry3L3E3L4 (SDE I)
Mid4L4E4L5 (SDE II)
Senior5aL5E5L6 (SDE III)
Staff5bL6E6L7 (Principal)
Senior Staff or Principal6 to 7L7 to L8E7 to E8L8 (Senior Principal)

The senior row decides most offers. Uber 5a, Google L5, Meta E5, and Amazon L6 are the same job under four different names.

One mistake is common and expensive. Uber Level 6 and Google L6 share a digit without sharing a job: a Google L6 is a Staff engineer, which matches Uber 5b, while an Uber 6 is Senior Staff, which matches Google L7.

A down-level is an offer at a level below the one you currently hold. Engineers moving from Google to Uber report this often, because Uber's codes look lower than the work they describe. Compare scope and total compensation, never the digits.

For the full five-company comparison, see the FAANG software engineer levels guide.

How Uber Sets Your Level

Uber decides the level from the interview loop, so agree the target level before the loop is scheduled. Ask the recruiter which level the interviewers are calibrated against.

The loop changes shape with the level. New graduate candidates report a coding-heavy process, while candidates at 5a and above report that design and ownership rounds carry most of the decision. Uber also runs a machine coding round, where you build a small working program instead of solving a puzzle.

Two things move the decision most. The first is the scope you describe, so say what you decided and owned rather than what your team delivered. The second is the design rounds, and Uber system design questions focus on problems such as matching drivers with riders and pricing trips.

Frequently asked questions

What is L5a at Uber? L5a is Senior Software Engineer, Uber's senior individual contributor level. Uber postings ask for six or more years of experience, and levels.fyi reports median total compensation near $421K.

What is the difference between L5a and L5b at Uber? Scope, not coding skill. A 5a leads a complex project inside one team, while a 5b owns a problem no single team can finish alone. The reported pay difference is roughly $200K per year.

Is Uber L5 the same as Google L5? Uber 5a matches Google L5, and both are the senior engineer level. Uber 5b sits a step above and matches Google L6. An offer described only as "L5" is ambiguous, so ask which half it is.

What is the terminal level at Uber? Engineers report that Level 5a, Senior Software Engineer, is Uber's first terminal level, meaning one you can hold indefinitely with no pressure to be promoted. Level 4 is not terminal.

How many years of experience do you need for Uber L5a? Uber's own Senior Software Engineer postings ask for six or more years. Staff postings at 5b ask for nine or more, and Senior Staff postings at Level 6 ask for ten or more.

What is Staff Software Engineer at Uber? Staff Software Engineer is Level 5b, the first Uber level defined by work that crosses team boundaries. Uber publishes a base range of 232,000 to 258,000, and levels.fyi reports median total compensation near $620K.

Does Uber publish its engineering levels? No. There is no public Uber level matrix. Job postings print titles, minimum years of experience, and base salary ranges, and some print the code directly, such as "Senior Staff Engineer (L6)". Everything else here comes from levels.fyi and from engineers reporting their own offers.
