How to Answer: "Why Do You Want to Work at Trade Republic?"
The Trade Republic application form asks this question in writing: "What excites you about the opportunity to join Trade Republic?" The best answer connects one specific part of the product to work you have already done. Trade Republic is a German mobile broker that also holds a full banking license, and it offers commission-free trading and savings plans across many European countries. A strong answer proves three things: that you know what the product does, that you have built something where being correct with money mattered, and that you want the constraints of a regulated bank.
What the Interviewer Listens For
1. Real product knowledge. Name a specific part of the product rather than the category, because every interviewer has already heard the category praised. Savings plans run on fixed dates each month, on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, and 23rd, and a plan executes on the next trading day when the exchange is closed. They buy fractional shares, which are pieces of a share smaller than one whole unit, and the executions happen inside the trading hours of XETRA, the German electronic exchange.
2. Comfort with regulation. Trade Republic holds a full banking license from the European Central Bank and answers to the German financial regulator, BaFin. That changes daily engineering work, because audit trails, approvals, and record keeping become part of every feature. Say plainly that you want that constraint, then give one example of working under a similar one.
3. Interest in reliability under load. The app has had reported service problems during sudden surges in trading volume, when many customers open it at the same time. Trade Republic publishes an engineering newsletter with detailed technical articles about its own systems. Interest in correctness during peak load is therefore a credible and specific answer.
4. Fit with the mission and the setup. The stated mission is to empower everyone to create wealth with easy, safe and free access to the financial system. The product covers share trading, savings plans, bonds, and crypto, so name the area you want. Engineering roles are posted as hybrid, with two to three days a week in the office, so address relocation directly if it applies to you.
A Three Part Structure
Part 1: The product detail (2 to 3 sentences). Name the part of Trade Republic that interests you, and say why, with evidence from your own use or reading.
Part 2: Your proof (2 to 3 sentences). Describe one system you built where being correct mattered more than being fast, and include a number in the result.
Part 3: The direction (1 to 2 sentences). Say what you want to build at Trade Republic next, and connect it to the area you named first.
Sample Answer
"I want to work at Trade Republic because savings plan execution is the kind of problem I enjoy. At my current company I own the scheduled transfers service, which runs about 300,000 transfers a month on fixed dates. Every run has to be safe to repeat, so a retry never moves money twice. I rebuilt it around an outbox table and partitioned workers, and the end of month window finished in 6 minutes instead of 40. The hardest part was never throughput but reconciliation, and that is the part I want to do at a larger scale. Trade Republic solves the same kind of problem for far more savings plans, inside exchange hours and under a banking license. I want to work on that execution path and on the checks that prove every order was placed once."
This answer works because every claim includes proof: the product interest names a real mechanism, and the ownership claim comes with a number. Reconciliation means proving that two separate sets of records agree, and naming it shows real experience with money systems.
Where the Question Appears
The written form asks it first, so your typed answer is read before any call takes place. Expect it again in the intro call, which one candidate reported as about 15 minutes, and then once more in the behavioral round with two engineering managers.
Keep the same core answer each time, and add one new detail in the later round, such as a point from the engineering blog. Interviewers compare notes, and they trust a story less when it changes between rounds.
Common Mistakes
- Praising commission-free trading only. Many brokers advertise the same thing, so name the mechanism behind it instead, such as best price routing or savings plan execution.
- Ignoring the bank part. Trade Republic is a licensed bank and not only an app, so an answer that never mentions safety, audit, or customer money leaves out most of the job.
- No number in the proof. A claim about ownership without a measurement is only an opinion, and interviewers here ask follow-up questions until they find the measurement.
- Skipping the location question. Engineering roles are hybrid and Trade Republic is headquartered in Berlin, so say where you will be and raise visa needs early rather than late.
- Reciting the mission back. Quoting the mission sentence proves nothing on its own, so connect it to one thing you built or one customer problem you fixed.
How to Prepare
- Read the full loop first. What is the Trade Republic interview process like? shows which rounds ask the motivation question and in what form.
- Reuse your product research. The same reading supports the Trade Republic system design interview, so study the product once and use it twice.
- Know the waiting times. How long it takes to hear back sets your expectations after you send the written answer.
- Practice evidence first answers. Grokking Modern Behavioral Interview teaches stories that use proof rather than adjectives.
